Description: This simple VAG-COM mod allows you to disable those annoying Daytime Running Lights. If you have a full-color MFI on your speedometer cluster then this mod will also now add an option to enable/disable DRL's under the "Lighting & Convenience" menu. Statistics have reported that there has been no noticeable decrease in automotive related crashes where DRL's were utilized. Disabling the DRL's not only looks better - but it stops the unneccesary use... thus extending the life of those super expensive HID bulbs! Here's a little secret - most Touareg headlights already kick on automatically at speeds over 85+ MPH whether or not DRL's are disabled! (quoted from 2008 Owner's Manual)

This was the process for my '08 T2 V8... your process may vary.
FYI: Cable used was the $349 Ross-Tech "HEX-USB+CAN Interface"

  1. Plug In Ross-Tech Cable (underneath driver dash)...
  2. Turn your Touareg's Ignition On...
  3. Open VCDS Application on Your Computer...
  4. Click the "Select" button under Select Control Module....
  5. Click the button labeled "09-Cent. Elect. "...
  6. Click the button labeled "Coding"...
  7. Highlight and Copy the complete "Long Code"...
  8. Paste the Long Code into the blank box below...
  9. Change only the FIRST TWO numbers in the long code to "22" (current factory pre-set North American code should be "23")
  10. The DRL's should now be OFF.
  11. Click the "Save" button.
  12. You are DONE!
PLEASE NOTE:

The menu option to turn ON/OFF DRL's in the full-color MFI will only be available after a complete power cycle of the vehicle. Simply turn off your car - remove your ross-tech cable - remove key - shut and lock doors - NOW IT SHOULD WORK!

I have a 2012 v6 lux Touareg and want to disable those darn Daytime Running Lights. My Long code begins with 26 and not 23. I tried changing it to 22 but nothing. Those lights are stll on. Nothing in the displays either. Anyone have luck disabling DRLs in a 2012? How about a 2011?

Thanks

It took me a while to find this posting, but the search was well worthwhile, as this procedure worked perfectly on my 2010 TDI, as it probably will on all T2's. Thanks for posting

Your 2010 TDI is a T2 here in NA. The new 2011-12 are the T3's. T2's here were only known as facelift versions in the ROW.

I'm not quite sure what point you're making. I'm aware of what a (NA) T3 is, and I was not referring to them in my comment, as I am not acquainted with how they may differ electronically from a NA T2.

Hence I revise my remark to indicate that the published soulution should work for all NA T2's.

Has anyone tried it on a T3?

Still watching this thread to learn whether anyone done this on an 2011 or 2012? If so, how?
I was able to turn off the Daytime running lights on my 2012. I went into 09 Cent.Elec coding. With the long code helper I went into the 4th set of bytes and saw the DRL setting and adjusted it. I now have a setting in the exterior lighting menu to turn them on or off. I used the 11.8 version of vag-com.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the horrible grammar. Still getting used to an iPad keyboard! I will be ordering an interface/vag-com from Ross-Tech this week so I will hopefully begin to understand what 09 Cent.Elec coding and long code helper means!

Received the cable and downloaded the software. Worked like a charm on my 2011 Lux! Had to use the 11.10.1 Beta version of VCDS as the "standard" 10.6.5 version didn't offer any assistance through the long code helper.
THANKS!!

Would this work on a T1?
I used the same procedure to disable DRL's on my 04 and my 10. I don't recall using the long code helper at all do this mod on my 10 and was not needed. I just did it the way it was done on the T1's.

This was partly what I was getting at with my earlier post in that there was not much that different between T1 and T2 in this respect. Long coding seems to be more useful in the T3 versions.

Actually it's easier on the T1. Simply go into the Central Electronics module 9, go to the coding button, and recode by subtracting 1 from the existing coding, "do it" and close the controller.

After you disconnect the computer, turn off the key, lock up, unlock, and turn the ignition back on, you will find a new entry in your MFI under the lighting controls, entitled "day lights". Uncheck, and your DRL's are off.:)

Interesting reading, but I wonder at the logic at work here. Given that T1 and T2 owners are behind the DTRs in the first place, how could they be considered "annoying".

That said, VW must have given consideration to HID longevity in the T3. Cuz my DTRs are comprised of LEDs that surround 3 sides of the HIDs.

DLR's were considered as a supposed great safety feature that was supposed to make you more noticable in day light hours. They were arrived at as to prevent accidents while being more noticable. There has been not much documented fact to support this claim. Most of the T1 and T2 owners who had Xenon lights turned them off due to the shortened life span of the bulbs from being on all the time. Xenon bulbs were at full brightness with DRL's on as apposed to halogen which tend to run at a reduce wattage when in DRL mode. I think the reasoning with doing LED DRL's makes more sense so you are not putting extra duty on your headlights running them all the time. I still don't feel the DRL's make a huge difference, but this is my opinion. LED DRL's could be construed as decrative lighting at this point since that is the only function they serve.
