I have a 2008 V6 with about 35k on the clock and last week I noticed a nosier then usual start up. A loud rattle for about 2 seconds then quiets down. Sounds like noisy lifters. Oil level checks fine. Any thoughts?

My 07 vr6 has started doing this as well. The sound is almost like a diesel when first started. Dealer changed oil and added BG moa. It does this totally at random. Doesn't always do it. They said it is cam chain noise. The temps here have been over 100 most the summer with driving temps on display showing 111 while moving. Oil temp is one line above 200.

I didn't think to correlate high ambient temps with this noise.

I don't know if temp has anything to do with it, but that is when mine started. It never made this noise over the winter or even last summer. The extreme heat is the only thing I can think of..... It only has had castrol slx that the dealer uses. The mileage is 47,000. My 10yr old GTI with 2.8 vr6 doesn't make this low dieseling noise, but it does make the clanking chain noise. I'm kinda stumped..... I would rather correct the problem now, instead of waiting for something to break. I

It may not be temp related...... I just drove home from work, with it being 107 outside, and no noise at startup. Maybe it starts occuring around a certain mileage. I have noticed no loss of power, it flys down the road as usual. I know there has been mention of faulty bolt on oil pump causing problems on the vr6. My dealer assured me that wasn't the case on mine, but still supposedly the replacement pump has been redesigned. Just a thought.....

I can understand if it sits for days, and has to pump up. This is happening in a matter of a few minutes - hrs. It also did it before my oil change, and after including BG moa additive. The dealer added the moa even with the approved castrol slx. This just started about 5,000 miles ago. Now at 47k.

All Model Year Engines with Adjustable Cam Timing

If you have a complaint of a rattle or knocking noise coming from the Camshaft Chain Tensioner(s) or Camshaft Adjuster(s) for the first couple of seconds after the engine starts, do NOT replace the Camshaft Tensioner(s) or Camshaft Adjuster(s) for this concern; it will NOT eliminate this noise.

Camshaft adjustment is hydraulically actuated and controlled by engine oil pressure. If the engine hasn’t been run for a length of time, the oil pressure drops and some of the oil partially flows back into the sump. After a cold start, by design, oil pressure inside the camshaft adjusters must be built up as fast as possible which can sometimes cause a rattle or knocking noise. The noise is considered normal.

Hope this helps ;).
