:confused:=;hi,

just joined the forum,

hopefully get some answers, bought a 2006, 2.5 tdi, absolutlely gorgeous with chrome running boards and just nice all round.

guy that i bought it from allegedly serviced at vw.

when start the engine it makes a slight knocking noise, and been told that the wrong oil is in the engine making it misfire???

However, true that is i dont know, although recently went out with family on a very hot day and no knocking at all just sounded lovely.

Spoke with smith knight and fay they want to charge me nearly ÂŁ2000 to check what the problem might be and then they will fix it hmmm sound far too expensive, and the bloody brake assist workshop indicator has just come on only done 52k

pls help as only a newbie to the site, and just dont want to spend spend spend, you must know what i mean

thanks for any assistance

change to correct oil now if ANY doubt!! do a search here, correct oil for R5 is vital to ensure it does not foam and cause damage and provide correct medium for pd injector pumps (engine oil used in cam pd fuel pumps).

check battery voltage, common for drive train errors to show when voltages are low due to failing battery

mo23851 - if you haven't already done so, join and post this on the UK site asap.

where's there's a wealth of experience with your engine.

Use the search facility and you'll soon realise the correct engine oil in your car is critical. Even some VW dealers get it wrong.

Look out for any replies from chesters - he's v. knowledgeable.

With your mileage and age of car you are also potentially moving towards well known prop shaft and gearbox repairs so do searches on "valve chest" and "centre bearing" and whilst you're at it, look up "stepper motor".

Don't try and repalce headlight bulbs without reading up on it too - it's not even in the handbook as VW want you to go to a dealer for a bulb!

If you haven't got a warranty, then you also need to get a Warranty Direct warranty ASAP. Again use the search facility to see how to get the best deal out of them.

Tregs were expensive new and they're expensive to fix and as the years pass more things are likely to go wrong and they don't get any cheaper.

I do have a bit of knocking sound up to 1200 rpm,but after that is very smooth.. check everything that noobytoogy said.. Check the center bearing on the drive shaft, just lift the car up and try to move the drive shaft up and down,if it moves more then a centimeter the bearing should be replaced.. As for the stepper motor I am starting to feel it round the corners..
