VEHICLE: 2011 Touareg Sport TDI

I am still racking up the miles, now at 20,100 miles on the odometer. I took it in for the 20K service interval yesterday. Here is a synopses of my owner experience to date:

FIRST 10,000 MILES
* Refer to the thread I created on March 7th at this link http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f63/10-000-mile-update-2011-touareg-tdi-53302.html

NEXT 10,000 MILES
* Last week, I called and made an appointment for the 20K service for yesterday. They were unable to complete the service because they did not have the fuel filter or the cabin filter in stock. They said that because they do not see very many Touareg diesels, their parts department does not keep everything in stock "because they base their inventory on sales." Can you believe that they don't stock common service items for a $50,000 vehicle that was introduced eight months ago? Now, I have to delay a trip to take it back in tomorrow for them to change out those two filters.
* Regarding the urea-based AdBlue, I did not have to add any before the first 10,000 mile service interval. However, at about 5.000 miles after that service, the low AdBlue warning came on. I was on Vacation at Hilton Head and took it to the dealer there to have it added. They told me that normally they would charge for adding it to a vehicle that they had not serviced but that the manager had decided to not charge me. They also indicated that it was unusual for it to be needed in so few miles after a scheduled service. I am curious to see if that occurrence was an anomaly because AdBlue is very expensive.
* All the compliments that I expressed regarding the engine and transmission still apply. For any kind of normal driving, the power (torque) band is near-perfect. I have owned four Mercedes diesels and none of them were as driver-friendly as the Touareg TDI.
* The fuel consumption has gotten better. I commute 135 miles round-trip on a state highway with only a few hills and about eight or nine red-light stops. Door-to-door, I am averaging close to 32 MPG. On long interstate highway trips driving about 10 MPH over the posted limit, it falls to about 30 MPG. Here is the best part: My overall average for the past 9,000 miles is 29.2 MPG. That includes all urban and highway miles. I realize that most of you probably do not have as high percentage of highway miles as I do and I doubt that most of you will see this good of an average.
* I have the same ratcheting sensation in the steering at parking lot speeds that I have read in other posts on this forum. It seems to be worse when turning to the right. I think it is a characteristic of the drive train, not the steering mechanism. I surmise that it has to do with the center differential having to reallocate how much torque is directed to the front wheels to compensate for the variance in wheel travel while turning. I may be completely off base but I have learned not to let the steering sensation bother me because once you are underway, it disappears and the vehicle has very good steering manners.
* The Germans are good at a lot of things but that does not include electrical controls. The rear hatch automatic closing mechanism mysteriously stopped working last week. After letting it sit for four hours, it "tried" to work but would only move the hatch about six inches. However, by the next morning, it had fixed itself. I spoke to a VW technician and he just laughed and told me that they have what they call a "Jesus battery" that they use to reboot all systems when a mysterious electrical glitch appears.
* In my previous post at 10,000 miles, I went into detail about how uncomfortable the design of the front seat cushions is. I defy you to find a comfortable way to let the underside of your leg rest on the seat cushion for more than a few minutes at a time. Instead of rounding off the front of the cushion, they have it squared off so that it protrudes to a point exactly in the wrong place. This is not bothersome for short jaunts but is maddening during long trips.
* By now, everyone is aware of the poorly located front seat controls. Unless special care is taken as you exit the car, the driver and/or passenger often "adjust" the seat backs unintentionally. Also, I have trained myself to frequently toggle the seat back to bring it back to the original upright position (it seems to recline an inch or two every half hour or so).
* I read some negative comments about the Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season tires but I am extremely pleased so far. At, 20,000 miles, they have worn very evenly and they have not come close to being down to the wear bars. I think they will certainly be good for another 15,000 miles or more. Not bad for an SUV! Incidentally, I use nitrogen and over-inflate them by three or four PSI and it has not caused them to show too much wear in the center and it has not impacted handling. Maybe it is contributing to my good fuel consumption too.

Overall, this is a great vehicle. Solid as a rock! Drives better than any SUV that I have experienced. Great infotainment systems. I just hope that VW has "early-retired" the seat designer!

I'll be back at 30,000 miles (probably in September) unless something occurs that justifies a mid-interval update.

Great update! Thanks.

Thanks for the update.

Adblue is no more difficult to put in than windshield washer fluid and costs about the same. I bought several gallons from NAPA for less than $5 gallon and my Walmart now sells 2 1/2 gallon cubes for even less.

Weird about the seats. My '10 seats aren't overly comfy but are certainly fine. About the ONLY thing I liked better about the X5 when I drove one before we got the Treg. They do have nice seats. But again, mine aren't bad, pretty much on par with the seats in our XC90, maybe just a slight edge to the Volvo. We've done many 8-9 hour trips and no buns issues. Apparently everything was on the table when it came to reducing costs in 2011?

BTW, same problems here with our dealer not knowing, not caring frankly about Touaregs Adblue or their parts. Think I have 3 weeks total time to date just waiting on parts in 19 months. One of the reasons we sadly have ours on the sales block.

Thanks for the info. I had been told by the dealer that had to top off the AdBlue that his manager had waived the charge for it but that it would have been over $100 if I had been charged for it. I like your answer much better!

I just can't get comfortable if I try to rest my legs on the seat cushion. If you look at the design of the cushion and seat, it is plain to see that it should have been rounded off at the front corners of the seat cushion. For a high mileage driver like me, this is not a minor issue. I like the seat back design, but the cushion is the problem. The back seat is among the best I have seen in an SUV.

I can't get a fuel filter locally either, and it costs $65!
After putting 83,000 miles on a Hyundai Genesis which had every bell and whistle imaginable, it is hard to understand VW's charges for parts and labor. The Genesis service interval was 7,500 miles and it usually ran between $60 and $80 at the dealer. It never needed brakes or anything other than the routine service. Once I roll past the first three services that VW covers, I am hearing that the service will run from $300 to $650, depending on which interval.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions that the Genesis is an inferior, lesser engineered vehicle, they should own one for a while. After having owned several Mercedes, BMW's and Lexus, I thought the Genesis could hold its own with all of them, both in dependability and performance.

Sorry for getting off-subject, but when you mentioned one filter costing $65 (and you can't find it even at that cost), it elevated my blood pressure a few degrees!

Filter pack is 96 dollars this includes
OEM Oil Filter
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Charcoal Cabin Filter
Q7 & Touareg V6 Filter Pack (CATA) - IDParts.com

Just the fuel filter is 56 dollars
Fuel Filter (V6 TDI CATA) - 7L6127434C - IDParts.com

This are simple DIY that can save you a ton of money, just be careful changing fuel filters, if you do make sure the system is primed before you start it as the CR HPFP doesn't take lightly to runing on air and could be damaged within seconds. Best thing to do is to do a prime via Vag-Com at least 2-3 times as the bentley manual suggests.

I can tell that you what you are doing!

My V8's services are under $200 every time. Except for when timing belt was replaced. Not sure what a Genesis is, but with big engines the services are always quite a bit more, a good chunk of that is the synthetic oil and labor for 137 drain plugs and the 17 computer resets that are needed in between each step of changing the oil.

I've changed my fuel filter twice on my V10 and many times on my 06 Jetta TDI and I've never primed the pump.
those vehicles arn't CR engines with a hpfp. If you plan on doing any work on these engines especially the TDI i suggest you head over to tdiclub.com and read up. There are great diy articles with pictures and tons of great advice. The older tdi engines, such as my ALH engine I have in my 00' beetle, didn't need to be primed via Vag-com, you could simply fill the filter with diesel fuel or additive and the air would work it's way out with little or no damage, the new HPFP's are alot more sensitive by design, to air in the system and running them dry will do serious damage as they are lubricated by the fuel that runs through them.

Looks like IDParts.com is a good resource for a DIYer. However, they don't list the V6 TDI dipstick (VW part no. 059 115 611aa from a post on myturbodiesel.com) I'd like to buy for my 2011 Treg. Any suggestions other than a dealer where I can find a dipstick?

TIA,

Spyder
