Ok so before anyone starts with if you are asking these questions you shoudl not buy a TDI V10. Also i know that 250K 155k miles is alot on an odometer. let me start with the WHY???

So my father passed away suddenly in 2022 and he has always had an infatuation with the VW Touareg, i remember hem seeing the video of it pulling the 747 and he was in awe. He has always been proud of his swiss and German heritage which made him love the car even more. So in honor of him i am undergoing a V10 purchase.

I have one in my line of sight, the maintenance history is vague but i do see that it definitely had its share of oil changes on time.

Now for the question, I am currently working on a list of things that I should replace once i get it as i would like to take engine out and figured i would do the following:
Tadem pump seals
DPF EGR
Cam Shaft
Cam bearings
Cam Shaft carrier bearings
Install inline thermostat
glow plugs
Turbo fluctuators
Maybe even look for a silicon hose kit to replace all the hoses

I am not sure it needs all this but figured if engine is out its a good idea

Anything I am missing?

What are your thoughts....

Although this is sweet and has the makings of a Hallmark movie, have you considered:

  • removing the engine
  • cost of parts
  • availability of parts
  • Technical and mechanical aptitude
  • how much time do you realistically have
  • what will be the intent of this vehicle?

  • Helpful

Let me be that other guy....
What is the condition of the cylinder walls? Turbos? Injectors? Tranny? Exhaust manifolds? Air suspension system?

Are you willing to dump another $20k or more to restore this thing into something the old man would've wanted to "have"?

My understanding from the seller is that everything has been well maintained, and tehre are no current issues minus the cosmetic issues with the interior
my purchase price for the car is $4000.00 Canadian which equals $2,934.83 at todays exchange rate. I have an interior sourced for 250 canadian.

A friend owns a shop and has offered to remove engine to get all the updates done and I will reiterate currently the car does not need anything to be repaced from what I have been told. I just figured since i want to make it as reliable as possible i would just do what i can when i get it

I can't imagine pulling an engine for preventative maintenance, on a good working vehicle. Especially since the community has discovered ways to do most of those things with the engine in place.

However, I think the fact that you are willing to put the money and time into maintaining it is great, I'd just start with the nicest and best maintained one you can afford, and then wait to replace things until it's necessary. It's usually much cheaper to spend more up front on a vehicle with a history of well documented maintenance, than to catch up on that. We've seen list members on here spend many tens of thousands on V10 Touaregs, only to then sell them for a tiny fraction of the cost of the work.
