I just did this so leaving a note to help make how to proceed clearer to those who come after me.

1.) I was looking for a firmware update, apparently there isn't one. My firmware is P0726 and DrGer told me there were no updates after K0711 for the NA market.

2.) If you want to update your maps, there is no newer version than the version available in the first post on this thread. It takes a long time to download from MEGA with the daily quotas... took me about a day.

3.) My head unit, RNS850, stipulated a max SD size of 32gb. I purchased a high quality SanDisk SDHC card from amazon for like $12. When I am done updating maps, I am going to load it with the Gravity's Rainbow audiobook and leave it in the SD card reader for a rainy day 37hr21min drive.

4.) After the file finished downloading from MEGA, I unpacked the .rar and transferred the files to the SD card. The files should appear in on the SD the same way they appear in the unpacked .rar file... do not nest them in folder. Do not use a Mac. Make sure file system is FAT32.

5.) Hook the vehicle up to a charger.

6.) Pop the prepped SD card into Slot 1 on your CD unit. Turn on the RNS850. Open the engineering menu by pressing SETUP, then PHONE, and holding both buttons until the menu pops up.

7.) Click update. Select SD Card 1. Click the updated maps file.

8.) Select User Defined mode, then open every available menu and select every available item. IIRC, at the bottom of the menu there are two options you switch from N to Y, and then one longer menu nested under VW_NAR with a bunch of options... I clicked them all.

9.) Initiate the update. Wait a few hours. When it's done, a menu should pop up and again, IIRC, you hit next. Then it will say something about a diagnostic tester feature... hit the "cancel documentation" button. The RNS850 will reboot.

10.) Upon restart, I could see the updated map style. Shortly thereafter, I got the unauthorized update message.

11.) To clear the unauthorized update messasge, download the fix from Lsys or DrGer: GitHub - DrGER2/MMI3G-Navdb-Unblocker: Patch MMI3G/3GP systems to unblock access to an updated navigation database.. I used DrGer's. I cleared my SD, loaded the files, and all you do it pop it into the reader and it will automatically execute.

12.) Screen will show fix has been applied. Restart RNS850 with 5-button press-- phone, climate, nav, traffic, center button. Voila!

13.) In my case, I turned off all of the POI icons except gas stations for less clutter on the map.

@Lysy @DrGER Would appreciate some help... Started to do the update, but most of the files on the card are coming up as "N/A" and cannot be selected. See pics. I downloaded the archive at the beginning of this thread and unpacked in a Windows environment onto a 32 GB FAT card, as instructed. (See screen capture.) I can select the files in the VW_NAR directory and change those to a "Y" but not any of the "N/A" ones at the top level. Tried to do this both with the "User defined" setting off and on in the "green" menu - same result. Should I just proceed with the update selecting only the files that I can (i.e., only those in VW_NAR), or is something wrong here? Thanks!

@Markoffate -- The "device" list presented by the Update process is the list of updatable components known by the MMI3GP main unit. Devices with "N/A" listed do not have corresponding entries in the release SD metainfo2.txt file -- since this is a navdb update, you should expect that none of the main unit hardware will have software updates.

That said, since this is not an official VW navdb release, you will need to drill down into all the VW_NAR nav sub-items and manually select the Application component to be updated (in User-defined mode, of course). --g

Copy that. Thanks. Yes, I’m able to select everything in the NAR subdirectory and change from “N” to “Y.” So to confirm, what you’re saying is that as long as I select all those items, it’s OK to update? Does it matter whether the Green menu User defined setting is selected? (Which it currently is)

I checked every option. Of note is most of the sub-options within VW_NAR appear to have two choices, 0>0 and 0 or xxxxx > xxxxxx. You can't select the 0>0 option, you select the selectable one in each submenu.

Yep, get that - thanks. VW_NAR isn’t the issue. I can check everything in that directory. It’s all the top-level options that are showing “N/A” and can’t be selected.

@Markoffate -- The metainfo2.txt file provided in the update prepared by @Lysy has "user-defined" mode enabled as a standard option. Note that this is NOT the standard behavior of official updates from VAG/Harman-Becker (hence, the need for the Green Engineering Menu in some cases). --g

You must use user defined mode, but I didn't need the green menu to access it. It was an option vs standard at the beginning of the update prompts.
Understood. And yes, that’s clear. Just wondering whether the User Defined Green Menu option makes any difference. Selecting it has been suggested in some of the upgrade guides. Thanks again.

You must

Ah. Very clear now. Thanks! Will proceed.

So, install finished, apparently without problems. However, route wouldn't calculate. Everything else worked well and the map had the updated appearance. I ran the @DrGER activation script unblocker patch after a message popped up saying something about contacting dealer due to invalid map database, at which point that message disappeared but system was still stuck on "Calculating route." This was fixed by pulling out of the garage and perhaps re-initializing the sat link. Didn't even need to drive around the block. Now all's well and the updated map looks and works great! Thank you @Lysy and @DrGER!

Just a point of clarification: my MMI3G navdb unblocker patch script does NOT "activate" an updated nav database. "Activation" implies that the system has a (legal) FSC file for the installed navdb. My SD script implements the Keldo work-around, discovered in 2015, which DISABLES the navdb activation process (and actually removes the FSC file for the production navdb). Refering to this process as "activation" perpetuates the idea that the MMI system is operating normally, which is not correct, and does a disservice to the MMI3G/RNS850 community. Please stop calling it "activation" ! --g
