I used to cram it as full as possible when refuelling, but I've got a bit more sympathy these days for the EVAP system. These days it's up to the nearest full litre after the click.

My average according to fuelly (tracking fuel receipts for volume and mileage) show 24.8 mpg, with a high of 43.4 mpg. This is over the total ownership period, from stock to deleted and tuned. 81 fillups tracked, 45,148km tracked. Hate to mix units, but I've seen a steady 2 L/100km reduction as a baseline in fuel consumption after the delete and tune between both Tregs.

That's just me though, and I'm on mostly highway, very little city, but gravel roads at least twice a day (I've measured a pretty consistent increase in consumption on gravel of about 30%).

Gas stations here have employees to fill up your car for you, so self-serve is not really a thing over here. The thing I don't like about this system is that they will always try to round up the amount so that they don't have to mess with calculating change. I, however, always tell them to not overfill and wherever the pump stops, that's it. Of course they don't care much now that payment is electronic anyway.

Whenever people post high MPG figures online, most of the time it ends up being based on a single tank of fuel where the pump clicked off too early, and they liked the calculation so much they unconsciously decided to never try measuring/calculating again.

I get a consistent long term 18mpg in my TDI Touareg. Granted it usually has tons of equipment onboard, larger tires, and I drive with a lead foot... but I am not about to believe people are literally using half the fuel I am in a substantially similar vehicle- especially given the stats @volkswagens-for-life posted above. Fuelly is pretty good at eliminating BS by doing the calculations for you properly.

I did some looking through the Touaregs on fuelly that were getting mid 20s and had a realistic long term average over a lot of tanks, and nearly every single one was a pre-fix vehicle back before the dieselgate recall that hadn't logged in over a decade. So I'd guess one can probably get ~25mpg if you drive gently, and are deleted/pre-fix.
This.. but also a majority of my experience (across EVERY auto manufacturer, but ESPECIALLY diesel drivers for some reason.. especially the truck guys) that these jamokes listen to their instant display without ever hand crunching their actual MPG numbers. You know the type.. the ones with 9,000lb dually pickups getting "24 miles per gallon" and the such. Because the instant display says so!

Coming off the expressway, decellerating, foot off the pedal, my instant consumption display says I'm getting 200mpg.

Then again, it's a low mileage 2016TDI (123,000 miles), but 200mpg is pretty cool:sneaky:

Oh yeah, well my T2 just shows dashed lines, which is short for "Infinity MPG." That's right my Touareg gets INFINITY MPG- proven by the VW MFD.

However, still not as good as the guy that told me his uncle's neighbor's uncle's alternator is making more hydrogen than it burns, giving him net positive free fuel... but of course the government is after him to cover it up

I've tracked 40,000 miles using Fuelly to keep track of my TDI. I've averaged 24.6 mpg for that distance. I've been deleted for about a year and the MPG seems to have come up a few mpg but have also towed trailers in that time. Hard to say for sure. This weekend I'm heading down to Tucson (1,400 miles one way). Will be running empty down there but towing a nice square 5'x8' U-haul trailer back. Last time I pulled one it immediately knocked the fuel mileage down to around 20 mpg on the highway.
Best tank I've ever had was 31.7

EDIT: I'm at 210,000 miles

I tracked mpg on fuelly on my 2014 TDI for 62,000 miles before I got lazy and stopped recording in 2023. My all-time avg MPG was 24.2. My best one time recording (by 2 mpg) was 31.9 mpg. That was a concerted effort to see if I could get the mpg over 30. I filled up, got back on the highway, went 200 miles locked at 60 mph (on a 55mph highway) and filled up again right off the highway. It was during the summer, also. I only saw mpg above 30mpg a handful of times. During the summer 28/29 mpg highway was the norm and during the winter it is closer to 23/24mpg highway.

Being an OG - are these numbers you're quoting pre-fix or post-fix?
