A 30 year old $18,000 car is a far cry from a decade old $70,000 Porsche luxury SUV. Maintenance and operation are on two totally different playing fields.

All I can say, is I don't regret paying the $42K I paid for my 30K mile 2016 Touareg TDI Executive in January 2022. Warranty to 5/2029 or 100K miles Powertrain / 120K miles Dieselgate. 3 years and 2 months later, I have 97K miles and have had 1 CEL.

Around 65/70K miles I had both my NOx cat and DPFs replaced, both conspicuously ~2 months after I installed a piggyback that upped boost and fueling. I have a feeling neither actually needed replacement, could've just cleared codes and kept running it without the piggyback and it likely would've been fine. That, or if they actually did need replacement, they woudlnt have needed it had I not installed the piggyback.

It's been 100% reliable otherwise. I add about 1QT of oil between 10K OCIs. .5Qts at 4K, .5QTs at 8K. I had to add coolant for the first time ever last week. I didn't add it myself - I brought it into my dealer with whom I have a strong relationship, and which has a Master Tech who owns 2 Touaregs. with 23K miles left on my dieselgate warranty, I am not at all worried because my dealer knows I had to add coolant, and they said to keep an eye on if it happens again and if so they'll look in the valley etc. I have had all maintenance done to factory spec at this dealer so I am fully covered if any repairs are necessary.

Considering you'd be looking at cars that are roughly half the cost, or even less than that, as long as you can vet the previous owner's maintenance and driving habits (was it used mostly for highway commuting? good. was it used for a 2 mile grocery trip once a week? bad.), I don't think there's much to lose. Just make sure your dealer has staff with Touareg experience. It's actually uncommon for a VW dealer these days to have staff with Touareg experience. My previous dealer who took care of my GTIs and Alltrack, the service manager said "Nice Tiguan" when I got my Touareg. I never went to that dealer again.

Lots of SUVs and cars I could recommend that possess more torque than the 3.0 TDI. You want a TDI... Why? The alh was a nice car 30 years ago. It also has absolutely nothing in common with the maintenance intense common rail 3.0

500 miles per tank can be done with more than a TDI.

Lots of SUV are more volumetrically efficient than the Touareg. I can find a slew of autos for shoving whatever you want into

Lots of large SUVs out there that are roomier than a Touareg

Lots of SUVs (and Subaru) have the ground clearance to crawl over curbs.

So if all of these are your requirement, I can put together a massive list of SUVs that would surprise the Touareg in every way.
I’m curious to hear your recs for an SUV with the same torque, MPG, and cargo/tow capacity as a Touareg TDI. I’ll look into them!

It's not that I hate the Touareg, in fact I absolutely loved mine and it was the best vehicle I ever owned... But in 2025 would I buy that same SUV? I don't think so. Unless it was a 2025 Touareg. The Touareg never left me stranded on the side of the road, I'll give it that... But man did it spend an accumulated six months or maybe longer at the dealer during the entire time I've had it. I got rid of mine several years ago but in the past couple years it's been harder and harder for dealers to get parts like DPF, engines, transmissions etc.

So for tow capacity you are requiring the full 8,000 lb? Or do you just need SOME towing capacity and not 8000? Coming from an ALH with no tow capacity I can't imagine you need much at this point, at least not per the original post

Forget towing. If you can suggest some vehicles that have comparable torque, MPG, and cargo area as a Touareg, are not hybrids, and can be bought for under $20k, I will gladly look into them. Towing is not the primary use for this vehicle but the ability is a plus.

You're killing me. I was going to suggest some fantastic hybrids cough Highlander hybrid cough.

For under $20k wasn't part of the original stipulation 🧐

Dodge Durango Citadel or an RT with the V6. Considerably more loaded than a Touareg. Darn near the same towing capacity. First and second row space nearly identical to the touareg, plus it has a third row. Cargo capacity is nearly 30% higher. Gas mileage is a few mpg lower but with gas being cheaper to purchase and also maintain the cost per mile is lower on the Durango.

Newer model Ford explorer - considerably more loaded on features and also more cargo capacity

Bmw x5. Killer turbocharged gasoline engines. Late models will ride and handle as sporty or sportier too. Modern tech.

Mercedes GLE class (actually, any single SUV they've made in the last 10 years) much more luxurious, better ride, twin turbo engine options.

Audi q5 2.0t - rides better, handles better, late models with the mild hybrid system get better mpg than the Touareg, similar cargo capacity. Good towing capacity. If you want a scrappy ass version of the q5 you get it with the supercharged 3.0 or the sq5

Audi q7. Does everything the touareg does and better. Don't bother with the 2.0t. Get the supercharged 3.0t or the twin turbo V8 in the sq7.

Any single land Rover. If you want utilitarian the Defender. If you want luxury the range Rover. They possess all the traits of the touareg but they get killer turbocharged or supercharged gasoline options engine options

BRB working and drafting.

yeah... it's a short list. If price was no object I would be driving a vintage Range Rover or a G-Wagen. To be fair, the car I was considering was $26k so spend a little more if you want, but there are many sub-20k Touaregs. Isn't this why we're all here in Club Touareg... and to me, they are a lot cooler than a Durango.

The other reason I like diesel is the longevity... gas cars with 150k are geriatric, diesels are just getting started. Say what you want about reliability and maintenance cost of the 3.0 V6 compared to the ALH, but properly maintained both will keep on chugging.

Oh there is a huge list! I'm balancing typing it out with working right now. If you go back and look I've added more

Bruh, you can't compare a PD to a CR.... the only similarity between the two is the pump you use at the fuel station!
Alh wasn't PD me boy 🧐

I think you are taking some liberties here. Cost and torque aside, most of these care are either significantly smaller, larger, or less efficient, or more expensive. In the VAG family specifically, the Q5 is not the same size as a Touareg and the Q7 is not as efficient. They are not all the same car. I'll look at the x5 and GLE again and maybe I'll be surprised.

yup.... you got me.... I was rushing and said something stupid..... but the point I was making is even more solidified by the VE pump system.
I know, that's the irony bro! Rotary pump injection for the win!

You keep saying "torque". I hate getting hung up terms. What is torque to you? And why is that word important to you?

Touché - a modern build Audi q5 is dimensionally 100% identical to a Touareg, as far as the passenger compartment goes. The q5 has 5 cubic feet less cargo room with the seats up than the Touareg. Negligible since they're both somewhat tight.

The q7 gets slightly less mpg, but the 3.0t is a world renown motor that requires very little in it's maintenance schedule vs the 3.0 TDI. I bet if I were to scale costs out for both the q7 would come out cheaper. And that's not including downtime due to emissions issues on the Touareg.

Also I added Land Rover to my list above, since they all pretty much have 7k+ towing capacities these days.

For anyone not doing heavy towing and/or offroading, the Q5 makes a lot more sense than a Touareg.

Lots of American trucks and SUVs will tow more, and/or be better offroad, but won’t drive like a German car, and feel cheap.

Ultimately, I don’t think there is anything else that does everything as well as a Touareg, but there will be other vehicles that do any specific thing better.

4400 lb towing capacity for the Q5 is more than plenty for a boat or a small camper or utility trailer or whatever else. They also drive fantastically and have wonderful cabins

You asked why I wanted a diesel. I said I like the torque, meaning I like how they drive. You said there were many SUVs and cars you could recommend that “possess more torque than the 3.0 TDI.”

Here’s an SQ5 for under 20k… you will like the name of the dealer, KRY, because that’s all you guys seem to be doing about me getting a diesel Touareg :)
