I’m in Massachusetts and interested in picking up a diesel Touareg.

Mass tests emission system by OBD for 15 years, so I have been looking at 2016 models sold in 2018 after dieselgate that have active warranties into 2028. However, all the Gen 2 Touaregs seem substantially similar so I could go the opposite direction and pay much less for an older Touareg that is already or soon to be emissions exempt and delete it, or delete it when it needs a new DPF.

How much would you value a Touareg under warranty? The cost difference is significant… like as much as $10k between an older model and a 2016 under warranty with the same mileage and trim.

I'd have to say I value it quite an awful lot... I'm probably an outlier, but they ended up replacing nearly every part in my engine bay, completely free, under the warranty. Mine is an '09 and still under warranty- it expired in 2023, but I got another free year tacked on when they finished replacing the engine last summer. The warranty covers almost everything, not just emissions equipment.

That said, I prefer the T1/T2 body design, so wouldn't personally be willing to go with a newer one for that reason.

I value(d) the warranty, but not enough to offset the $10k difference, especially since the '15+ have all sorts of ACC and eyelash failures.... (not covered by dieselgate)
Because of that, I'd gravitate towards a '13-14 instead.
13-14 seems like the worst of both worlds for me-- out of warranty but delete/tune not an option until 2028-2029.

This is cheap, in your hood, and ready for a delete (even though I doubt it needs a DPF at this stage).... I'd be all over it.
I saw that. In this case, I would need to replace DPF and hope it lasts until 2027. Significant discount compared to another car I was considering: Log into Facebook

I also kind of want ACC. Coming from a 5-speed TDI with few conveniences, the goal here is to have it all-- or as much as I can get.

Reached out to Larry, the guy with the treg in RI. It’s sold!

Good luck finding a TDI with warranty until 2028. All of the poors already did this years ago and it's becoming increasingly harder to find a TDI under warranty these days. This is why you're seeing everyone deleting or repairing these things improperly anymore.

There was one for sale recently, $26k. Now regretting not jumping on it.

They're out there, they're just hard to find. A few years ago an entire lot of Touareg's that were brand new, zero owner were released for $60-70k. I'm not sure what happened to them but you can try to track one down. I think most went to dealers across the country.

They also seem to be going for about the same money as a tdi cayenne…

Engine swap would definitely be worth it, but DPF maybe not. What was wrong with your engine? How many miles?

Here's an active comp, which would you choose?

Car #1: 2011 exec, 120k miles, $9k. I could delete/tune next year.

Car #2: 2016 exec, 64k miles, $26k. Dieselgate warranty into 2028. For $17k, in addition to newer, lower mileage car, with the updated motor, ACC, and ventilated seats, Car #2 would get me 3 years under dieselgate warranty AND THEN 3 years out-of-warranty when I couldn't delete and pass inspection. If DPF goes bad I would need to wait until 2031 to delete in my state.

There are far better options out there in 2025 than a Touareg, unfortunately. Unless you live in another part of the world and can get a brand new one.

Explain to me how you're deriving these coverage periods... I must be missing something.
Yeah I was wondering the same thing but didn't bother asking. Thanks for asking the big questions 💪

2016 model unsold until 2018. Dieselgate warranty effective 10 years / 120k miles from IN SERVICE DATE. 2016 models sold in 2018 post scandal have in service dates in 2018. 10 years from 2018 is 2028. Dieselgate warranty effective until 2028, confirmed directly with Volkswagen for each vehicle by VIN#.
