Has anyone fitted a catch can to a CR yet just wondering how much oil is being caught

At the risk of being "That Guy", have you used the "Search Community" function at the top of the page to search for threads on it?
I recall reading a few threads of people installing/discussing doing a catch can on different years.

Won’t that void the warranty though? I’m all for catch cans and DPF/EGR/AdBlue deletes if possible but most car makers in Australia will void your warranty if you fit a catch can unfortunately

No they dont affect warranty they collect oil vapor before it goes into inlet and helps avoid egr problems long term

Yes I know that, I’m saying many carmakers will void your warranty if you have a catch can fitted. Off memory I know that Toyota and Mitsubishi will void it, not sure about VW

IMO it's stupid for manufacturers to void a warranty for adding something that will actually benefit a vehicle, especially when there will be no negative effects to the vehicle. This is something they should do when manufactured.

not yet, considered it but none of the usual vendors has a kit specified. I have been sent install instructions from diesel care.com.au and suggestion to send engine bay photos to HPDiesel
Have to take a look at them yet.

bloody hell, second attempt as my first attempt disappeared.
So I bit the bullet and decided to install a Provent 200 using a universal kit from Western Filters as none of the vendors had a Touareg specific kit and one told me there was not enough room under the bonnet on a Touareg to install a Provent. I decided on the Provent after reading the Curtin University Research paper on Mist Filters/Catch cans catch cans .

First importantly, before you attempt to remove the original crankcase vent hose, remove the air filter to turbo plastic pipe to allow better access to the connectors on the hose. The connectors come off reasonably easily by compressing the lugs and wiggling the connector a bit. They have a rubber o-ring so a little tension is there. The connectors can break if you are rough or try to do it with the turbo pipe in place, a replacement hose from VW costs between about $75-$115 (don't ask me how I know).
Using a heat gun, I then removed the smaller connector from the vent hose and used the original hose as a sort of large 90 degree bend as you can see in the photos. A replacement smaller connector is available from Western Filters , Norma Quick Connector V2 19mm/19mm but the larger one is VW specific- a 19m-27mm Quick Connector which I coul dnot source anywhere except VW. Norma do may a 27mm-27mm connector that will suffice and Western Filter do stock that but then a reducer and connector is also required so better to use the original and don't break it!

I made up a bracket from some alloy we had lying around and cut it to shape with a bunch of trial and error. I used the two Torx screws on the passenger side of the front frame and the captive bolt/nut holding an existing unit in the engine bay as you can see. This location is the only one large enough to hold the Provent. Be careful to get the bend in the bracket fairly accurate and I also had to cut away a bit of the bracket below the hole after the photos to ensure the bracket sat flat on the captive bolt. This bolt is not very strong and so if the bracket is not flat or puts tension on the bolt it can snap (don't ask me how I know!) .
The hoses were then routed from around the front of the engine as there is not enough room at the rear, I also swapped the crankcase to Provent hose to be on top after the photos as it was making it difficult to reinstall the air filter to turbo pipe. This also allowed for better routing across the front to the Provent. I also used a couple of 90 deg connectors to remove strain on the crankcase connector, the hoses were cable tied a little way from the connector to allow flexibility as the engine moves during driving. Because there is no specific kit for our Touareg, we need to use the 25mm reducers and joiners at the Provent end.
Then I routed the drain hose down from the Provent and drilled a hole through the plastic/material engine cover under the car to allow access to the drain as per the photo.
I believe the Provent needs to be installed for 2-3000 km to soak the filter element before it starts really being useful, it will be a while before I can see how much (or little) oil is captured but I will update this once I do.
just ask if more detailed questions .
Sorry about the positioning of the photos, not sure how to correct that.

So I thought I would give an update. Driven about 6000km since the install and drained the can today. Got about 100-120mm of oily fluid out today. First photo was this morning and then second about 10 hours later. No water separation is apparent yet but will monitor. It is quite a bit of oily residue filtered from the intake, be interesting to see how it goes over time.

Thanks Sean looks like they need a can

Yeah, I am especially convinced this morning. After 24 hours it is all oil still. When I installed a can on my Ranger and drained it, after 24 hrs it had separated and about 80% was water. This is very black still.
