G'Day, we are getting code P0171 Bank 2 Lean. the engine light is on. The car runs great no missing.
We have replaced all the sensors, we were told in could be a timing belt or cam chain adjuster.
We have not performed a smoke test but we are pretty sure have no vac leaks.
The motor is a 7L V8 in a 2006 Touareg. We don't have a service agent locally, it's a 200km trip for us,
We are in Australia and have been quoted approx 3k to replace the timing belt with no guarantee it will fix the engine light.
I have been reading and could it be fuel related i.e. there was a recall on the fuel pump. I also read fuel cap?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forums.
Did you use VCDS to get that code or a generic scanner?
You say you replaced all the sensors. Which ones?

Smoke test it… you cannot be sure it doesn’t have leaks without this test and the code is usually related to vacuum leaks…

16555/P0171/000369 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1: System Too Lean
Possible Causes
  • Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) defective
  • Intake System Leak(s)
Possible Solutions
  • Check Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
  • Check Fuel Pressure Regulation
  • Check Fuel Pump
  • Check Injectors
  • Check Intake System for Leaks
  • Check Exhaust System for Leaks
  • Check Secondary Air System for Leaks
  • Check Vacuum Pipes for Leaks

G'Day Lachoradkov, thanks for your help. Sorry I put the wrong code it was P0174 System too Lean Bank 2. The bank 1 code disappeared after we put new plugs in.
This morning Paul (The guy helping me) reported that the Bank 1 too lean code came back, and a cam position sensor code. I have ordered a obdeleven next gen and will try and get some more info once we have it.
looking at your list do you think we can forget about the timing belt or cam chain tensioners for now?

So replacing the spark plugs actually didn’t change anything… try the smoke test.

Do you know what is the camshaft fault?
If you have vcds you can check measuring group 91, 92 and 93 to see the actual cam degrees…not sure if odb11 has this function…

16558/P0174 - System Too Lean, Bank 2
Possible Symptoms
  • Irregular behaviour
Possible Causes
  • Fuel system
  • Excessive fuel pressure
  • Leaking or contaminated fuel injectors
  • Leaking fuel pressure regulator
  • Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
  • Vapor recovery system
  • Air leaks after the MAF
  • Vacuum leaks
  • Improper seated engine oil dipstick
  • Stuck EGR valve
  • Oil overfill
  • Cam timing
  • Cylinder compression
  • Exhaust leaks before or near HO2Ss.

I have finally got my obdelleven and this is what scanned

P1138 - Bank2, mixture adaptation (add) System too lean Upper limit exceeded

The Live Data:

091 Camshaft adjustment - bank 1
engine speed 640/min
Last % 19.5%
Adjustment Off
Adjustment actual -1.00 °KW

092 Camshaft adjustment - bank 2
engine speed 640/min
Last % 19.5%
Adjustment Off
Adjustment actual 0.00 °KW

093 Phase position of cam pos sensors
engine speed 640/min
Last % 19.5%
Phase position bank 1
-3.00 °KW
Phase position bank 1
(Blank)

Some other observations:
I cleared the codes and went for a drive approx 10km no engine light, turn the car of and went to get some food, when I can back
put my foot on the brake and started the car the engine light came back on.
I also checked the fuel cap and noticed small cracks in the rubber seal.
The car is running great not misfires, idles and accelerates fine.

Any help where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any engine rattle noise when cold starting? Seems something wrong with your bank 2 timing - the p1347 fault…

If theres issues there, you might get the lean codes too…

Is the blank spot for bank 1 or 2?
