Hi there,

I've just bought a set of 4 8jx18 ET57 wheels for my 2006 3.0 V6 TDI. The seller claims the wheels are OEM original and are exactly the same that came with his 3.0 V6 TDI bought in 2007 at VW.

Upon inspecting the wheels, I’ve noticed that all of them have this unmistakable stamp: “RONAL 08/03/2013.” Also, one wheel has a number 2 stamped beside the valve hole. What does that number mean?

The chap at the local tyre shop says he believes the wheels were reconditioned/ refurbished on 08/03/2013 by RONAL.

I’ve asked the seller how come the RONAL stamps on the wheels are dated 08/03/2013, while oth he says the wheels are exactly the same ones that originally came with his 2007 Treg.

He’s consistently avoided to provide any meaningful explanation. He said the wheels are OEM, were never reconditioned/ refurbished, and doesn't want to explain why that RONAL stamp date.

Anyone can explain this discrepancy? and Why all wheels have RONAL stamps dated 08/03/2013 when the seller says the wheels are exactly the same originals that came with his 2007 Treg?

Ronal supplies lightweight aluminum wheels for the market according to their website.
Did the seller buy his Treg new or used? If used maybe someone installed the set and the seller thought they were OEM, or they're not being truthful.
Post up some pics of the face of the wheels.

The seller says he bought the Treg brand new from VW in 2007.
Pic attached. I understand that's the "Valley 18" wheel that came as SE in 2007 7L models.
The 4 wheels all are in surprisingly good condition.
But I can't reconcile what the seller told me and the "RONAL 08/03/2013" stamp in all wheels

I agree w/you. There's definitely something odd to the sellers story. Those do look like the OEM "valley" wheels. If they were on the sellers vehicle from new there's no way to get a company name and date stamp newer than '07.
I'd have to agree w/your local tire guy.

My question would have to be, who gives a ****? If I had sold wheels off a 20 year old car and the buyer was then asking me random questions about them, I would also not care. Look before you pay if you are worried.
Because inquiring minds want to know. What the **** is it to you?

You will never know, and it doesn't matter. If they were newer and the owner knew, he would have said, because people would pay more for newer wheels. These are 20 years old, and probably cost $200, who cares how old they are, they work. No one on here is going to be able to solve this mystery.

Maybe you are interpreting the date incorrectly. (if it is actually the date of manufacture)

For example, this wheel is from a 2003-2004 Audi

This is from a 2006-2013 Audi

And a 2003-2009 Toyota

My guess is that your wheels were manufactured on March 13 2008.

That's a good possibility, but if they were manufactured in '08 how did they get on a Treg bought in '07?

Reading the original post the seller didn't say they came from his 2007 Treg. He said they are exactly the same as what was on his 2007 Treg.
The seller claims the wheels are OEM original and are exactly the same that came with his 3.0 V6 TDI bought in 2007 at VW.

He says the wheels are exactly the same ones that originally came with his 2007 Treg.

The seller says he bought the Treg brand new from VW in 2007.
From everything I'm reading, and I know I've been told I have a reading problem by some, the OP states that the seller says they are the original wheels that came pre-installed on his Treg he bought brand new in '07.
Anyway I agree with @Brendanm. We on here are not going to be able to solve this mystery.

No he didn't.
He said:
OK so you're saying the seller played semantics by saying "They are the same as", but they were in fact not the same ones that were on the vehicle when he bought it.
Very well possible. The mystery still remains.

Ronal is the factory wheel supplier for VW. If that number is a date- in Germany they always put the year first so it is 2008, not 2013.

What are the chances he bought it new in 2008, and mis remembered the year 16 years later? Would not be surprising to me- most of my not-car-obsessed friends and family can't remember the exact year of their vehicles.

I’d bet money his car is actually a 2008, and those are the factory wheels it came with.
