I've had a grinding noise coming out of the front of my 2021 R Line (210kw TDI) for over two years, no pattern as to when and why it does this, the local dealer, country importer and mighty Volkswagen global engineering support have no idea as to what's causing this to occur apart form activating the ABS, which is quite surprising as the local dealer is aware of other similar/same vehicles presenting this same/similar symptom .... does anyone know where to start to look for the cause of this ???

Hello and welcome to the forums.
In the video it has the sound occur as you turn slightly right. Doe it do it when slightly turning left/going straight as well? Also, can you differentiate as to a particular side it's occurring on?

Ok, the VW importer in New Zealand has conducted testing of the vehicle towing a heavy trailer (> 1.5ton) , on a hilly wet road for 90KM with the breaks OFF, this is not only illegal , it's risky, compromises the integrity of the vehicle and invalidates the warranty

What? They did this before or after you bought the vehicle?

The defect has been present since early 2022 and despite the mountain of audio and video evidence they (the dealer and VW New Zealand) can't replicate and now say there is no defect, ABS unit has previously been replaced, quite concerning the VW New Zealand documented that they conducted illegal testing on a public road in wet weather conditions and my insurance policy is explicit that 'trials' are not covered, now trying to engage with them to see what happens next, proving quite difficult when they don't want to talk

The vehicle importer states that the cause is wheel slippage and noise is normal, 30kmph, dry sealed road .... really ???? WTF will happen when it rains ....

Does anyone else experience this noise or is my R-Line a lemon ?

I have occasionaly got something similalr when going over a bump and turning which I think is the ESC system correcting for a sudden sideways movement of the car caused by the bump. The road appears to have a couple of rough patches at the time of the ABS activation in your video so potentially this may be the cause ? Potentially it could be an intermittent fault in one of the ABS sensors confusing the system ?

the vehicle importer said the break unit replacement was only a 'goodwill' gesture, this kind of infers they're saying there was no defect with the ABS break unit ,it smells there's more to this than they're letting on, quite disrespectful, possibly devious, not sure what they're hiding

You seem like a pain to deal with. They replaced the abs module as you have an issue, and they couldn't figure it out, so they did something. Log all your wheel speeds with VCDS, you probably have a tone ring or sensor issue, it will only do something if it thinks you have an issue. Also it's "brake" not "break".

thanks for the feedback , it's the most comprehensive insight into this fault, still raises the question on why the distributor and VW AG can't/won't offer this feedback
Dealers are generally useless, dealerships pay like crap, the only people that choose to work there generally aren't able to get a job anywhere else.

can't comment on the dealers service team as this is outside my area of expertise, I see the crux being the country distributor / importer who I would assume has the backing of VW AG technical that the dealer relies on for difficult technical situations, their stance to date has been to point the finger at everything else (usage, environment) and not this vehicle as the cause of this noise, very much a nothing to see here move on attitude

nope, no alarms, no warning lights or events recorded (assuming it records abnormal events)\, just the noise, mostly on a RH bend, coming out of the corner, when braking and under 60km/ph, sometimes LH and/or when not braking

The noise is defintiely the ABS / ESC control activating. Can you tell which wheel it is coming from ? I has to be a wheel really losing traction or the car yawing signficantly or a fault in the systems that detect these issues. If its a fault in a wheel sensor then its probably the wheel that is braking that has the sensor fault.

there no loss of traction occurring/noticed and the noise is evident at as low as 20km/ph on a dry sealed roads, the noise is consistently coming from the base of the steering column which I'm informed is where the ABS unit is located, I thinks there's merit in your wheel sensor being the event triggering the action hypothesis , I have asked this question in combination with the camera (doesn't occur when its raining) but like the rest of the questions no explanation or answers have been provided

i would use an oscilloscope to view the wheel sensors output signalto see if any are changing output frequency randomly for short periods which does not register as a fault but triggers the ABS system. If this is not happening then it appears to be a ABS / ESC control module fault or a fault with other sensors that influence the system such as the yaw / tilt sensor.
