Hi all, I’ve scoured the forum and not found a solution to my problem so I’m posting a new thread.
I’ve had my 7P for nearly 2 years now and it is great at just about everything.
Suddenly a month ago the infotainment system wouldn’t power up when switching on the ignition. All I see is a black screen and no sound. Then after a few minutes of driving it will switch on and it looks like it is booting up from cold where normally the screen just switches on and radio plays.
Sometimes the reversing camera screen won’t show either, then sometimes everything works as normal.
Some people have reported similar issues but not quite the same. In most cases no solution has been found and VW just suggest to replace the unit at $2000+.
I’m hoping someone here has a solution or can confirm if I buy an aftermarket head unit, this will solve the issues. My fear is that there are many modules that could be the culprit and a new head unit wouldn’t fix a controller issue. My unit doesn’t have navigation and I’d like to know what model I have.
Cheers
Rick

Have you done a scan of the vehicle with VCDS to see if there are any faults?

Unfortunately I don’t have VCDS. What would it cost to have my local VW dealer plug it in?

Have a talk to Aaron at West Side Mechanical. He might be able to help you. He's a genius with VW vehicles.

Do I need VCDS to find that out? I’m going to get help from @meggsy next week. What is the latest firmware version I should be on?

You can enter SETUP then SYSTEM then VERSION INFORMATION. If You have older firmware, You can upgrade it, but when You do have connection problems, it won't fix anything. Start from the diagnostics, then upgrading.
Thanks, will check the firmware version. When I do come to upgrade is this a trip to VW?

No. In most cases, the dealership will have no idea of what you are talking about, let alone how to do it.
All the help you need is right here.

OK I got myself a OBDeleven scanner and found a few fault codes. The screen was blank at the time of the scan and so I expected the errors. I want to do the scan when the screen comes on and see if the codes still appear. I’ve tried looking up the codes but only seem to find Golf or Audi content in Google. The error codes are rather generic and suggest a connectivity issue so where do I start looking? Do I pull the unit out and check connectors for broken or loose wires?

FYI VW dealer wanted $200 just to look at the car and quote me for repairs. Definitely better to buy the scan tool than pay them I feel.

@Wizz954 -- What radio is fitted to your T'reg ? RNS850 should show as "5F Multimedia" in OBDeleven, and should include "56 Radio" and "47 Sound System" (or similar). RNS850 systems don't have a separate "Media Player" module, which leads me to believe your T'reg is fitted with the RCD550 radio (no NAV button on the console):

In this case, the connectivity issues are related to the the radio module not communicating with the CAN Gateway or the MDI module on the CAN bus. --g

Yes that’s the one. No satnav on my unit. Is there a test I can do to establish which module is at fault? Without knowing what MDI module is, are these my options?

1) Radio module fault - replace the RCD550 unit with an Apple CarPlay unit
2) MDI module fault - replace MDI module

I’ve found a repairer on the Gold Coast who would charge $140 to assess it and normally $459 to repair. Main board is not available any more so if it cannot be repaired it is a doorstop.

I am now thinking Apple CarPlay won’t fix my issue if it plugs into the RCD550 head unit. In which case what options are there to replace the entire unit with something else? I can get a used unit for $550 but if I can fit something better I would willingly spend $1000 for a new unit with Apple CarPlay
