Hi all,

I bought a 2011 V6 TDI 4D Sport Utility Blue in late March from a dealer in Littleton, CO, 120k miles. Took it to the dealer because engine light came on. It has been at the dealer for 4 weeks. They say it's a nox and heater core issue and VW isn't willing to fix it (still begging for them to send me the actual diagnosis, have not received official diagnosis yet). They say parts are not made anymore and the repairs are too costly, so waiting for buyback in 3-6 months is the only option they're giving me.

The sales dept of course wants to offer me $5k less than I paid for a trade in to get into another car.

Long time Land Rover owner and first time Touareg owner. I love the Touareg. Anyone have experience with this issue? Would rather take it to an independent VW shop if parts are indeed available.

Thanks!

I would go pick up your car and take it to a different dealer. VW has easily thrown more money at my TDI under the dieselgate warranty than the car is worth. Never have they suggested a buyback or told me parts were no longer available. NOx sensors are super common failures.

The fact that they won't give you a formal diagnosis is sketchy. Also, buyback values are calculated based on a formula from VW corporate, not negotiated by the sales department at your local dealer. Everything in this situation sounds off. I'd get your car out of there ASAP, or at the very least, give VW of America a call and open a case.

2020 sounds late for a fix to have been done but I wouldn't rule out that it sat in VW inventory until then. I bought mine, which WAS a buyback in 2020 and after that the Indy dealer who sold it to me said VW was still feeding buybacks in to the market via auction.

id go to the lookup website to confirm what their records show, then check the carfax which should indicate if/when VWoA owned it. Keep in mind that your warranty starts the date of the 1st retail sale not the date of the fix If it's truly a buyback.

FYI Hardey’s MotorWerks in Parker is a good Audi/VW specialized repair shop if you get tired of the dealers. They do good work, and they are a little cheaper than the dealer. I’ve brought my 2006 T1 v8 there a few times when the work was beyond my skill or I was feeling lazy.

Also, emissions mod was completed in 2020, so this would not be a dieselgate buyback. Not sure exactly how this qualifies as a buyback. Any clues?
I didn't actually answer your question. The period for deiselgate buybacks is over and done so there's no longer anything to qualify for. If it was owned by VWoA at any point in the last few years it is 99% a buyback. at this stage the only question would the start date of your warranty

you’re missing a piece of context here. The car is certainly a buyback - OP stated the diesel fix was completed in 2020. Most likely it was completed much earlier than that but didn’t hit the market till then.

it is actually a new thing in the last year or so that VW is beginning to buyback cars to stem the bleeding with Uber long warranty back orders. Those rental bills add up fast. They are basically just seeking to put this completely behind them, they are sick of dealing with the warranty repairs. They want to move on and forget dieselgate completely

I'm seeing guesses but not any solid evidence that it's a buy back. that it was fixed I. 2020 doesn't really tell you anything about the ownership history.

Interesting... I have been surprised how VW has multiple times paid about what my car is worth for warranty repairs.

Do you have any poof of this?
Nothing more than a discussion I heard when I worked at a dealer in late ‘21. A Golf was in that needed a ton of work and the mothership (excuse me, Fathership) said to initiate a buyback. I believe some sort of official communication exists on the topic.

It wouldn't surprise me if VW threw in the towel. When diesels with under 40K miles are blowing up the emissions systems,it will be an expensive and painful process to keep the replacements going for yrs. It's all about the emissions systems that aren't robust, and continuously fail. The engines are wonderful machines and I wish I could get one that worked reliably.
