Hi All - I have been the proud owner of a 2012 TDI Exec in Miami Florida. I absolutely love the truck. No snow down here but and appreciate the stability when it rains. I don't know of another vehicle that feels perfect at 75mph. Its black on black and I bought it doing 95K and its now at 122K.

HOWEVER, since I purchased in 2019 there is a recurring engine issue with a shudder sometimes but no CEL I get poor milage (16-19mpg). Eventually when the CEL did come on, it was for p2015 Air intake bank 1. VW would change sensors on warranty. But after nearly 3 years of the same situation, much pain and frustration with the dealerships, VOA took the situation seriously and offered to buy back the vehicle OR put in a new engine. I looked into the buyback thinking that I could replace it, but the price offered was about half the replacement value, so under duress I agreed to change the engine.

They are currently changing the engine, and noticed an abnormality on the exhaust so decided to change the entire system. The previous visit saw them change the adblue. So aside from the transmission, I will essentially have a mechanically new vehicle!

So here are my questions and concerns:
1) Is there any maintenance that one could/should do while the engine is removed?
2) The vehicle is still covered under warranty until the end of the year. Its been great since they have done over 18K worth of work on the vehicle. But as the warranty comes to a close, I was wondering if.......with a new engine.....I should be focused on getting an extended warranty vs just driving or even (gulp) saying goodbye to it.
3) On that note, despite my outcome with the new exhaust and engine, VW has been very cagey on communicating. Its been hit or miss. Even to get a list of the work that they will perform has been tricky and non-committal. My most recent request to get an extension on warranty considering the many months its been in the dealers lot was summarily denied. Is that request so far out of line?
4)Anyone know the dealer standard warranty on parts and labor?

Any general opinions or advice would be appreciated.

I'm fairly certain that any new dealer install3d part, regardless of who paid for it, will come with at least a 12 mo warranty. They will most likely give you a new long block which means things like starter alternator, AC compressor will be from your old engine. You should also have the remainder of the emission warranty.

while you should ask precisely what's covered on any replacement engine, expect any "extras" to cost an arm and both legs. I'd take the win

Thanks for the info! I'll request again to get a breakdown and see if I can get clarity. Happy that it comes with a 12 month warranty I am hoping it comes home in great shape!

I'd be surprised if the new engine will come with a full warranty. As far as I'm aware, once your dieselgate warranty is over, everything replaced under that will not be covered under any further warranty. At least that's how it was explained to me at the dealer I buy parts through for my shop.

I'd probably pay extra for new engine mounts (OEM only). Other than that, I wouldn't bother with anything else. Things like the starter/alternator/A/C compressor etc. aren't difficult to replace once the engine is in, so there's not a lot of risk in re-using them.

Update: They changed the engine, turbo, hoses, sensors. A LOT of work. Significantly more that the current market value of the vehicle. Then 2 days later, CEL came on....this time the Adblue which they are replacing as well ! Its been a process, but hoping that all comes out well on the other side. Not much else there to replace. Will keep you posted.

Close. VW been working on it 4 months. Did upper oil pan and timing chains. Got it back together and the motor locked up. They have a new engine and turbo sitting on hand. But now VW wants to do a buyback.
Keep us posted. I was thoroughly disappointed with the offer. Better for me to get a new engine and keep it or sell it. Good luck!

Offer was 13k as expected. Meanwhile the repair bill has be getting close to 20-30k. Told them to pound sand and fix my Touareg.

good for you. I don't think they can compel you to sell It back to them absent warranty language stating "in the event repairs exceed the value of the vehicle" yada yada yada

So that's exactly what happened to me. Same amount too. Currently, the engine has been replaced, adblue system. However after they replaced easily 25K worth of engine and parts, the saga continues. CEL came on again. I am getting a little tired and I may have see if this can be done through legal means to get FMV. Just had the old girl detailed and tinted too.....and with gas shortages here in Florida, TDI needs to be out of the shop. :( Message me directly if you guys have any advice.

Some accountant at VOA would be very pissed if these know the of the craziness taking place in the field.

what the hell is that suppose to mean? I did not know how terrible vw service and customer service was until this issue. I have always worked on my own cars.
He deleted it and is mad vwoa won't take care of him...
