Hi All - I have been the proud owner of a 2012 TDI Exec in Miami Florida. I absolutely love the truck. No snow down here but and appreciate the stability when it rains. I don't know of another vehicle that feels perfect at 75mph. Its black on black and I bought it doing 95K and its now at 122K.
HOWEVER, since I purchased in 2019 there is a recurring engine issue with a shudder sometimes but no CEL I get poor milage (16-19mpg). Eventually when the CEL did come on, it was for p2015 Air intake bank 1. VW would change sensors on warranty. But after nearly 3 years of the same situation, much pain and frustration with the dealerships, VOA took the situation seriously and offered to buy back the vehicle OR put in a new engine. I looked into the buyback thinking that I could replace it, but the price offered was about half the replacement value, so under duress I agreed to change the engine.
They are currently changing the engine, and noticed an abnormality on the exhaust so decided to change the entire system. The previous visit saw them change the adblue. So aside from the transmission, I will essentially have a mechanically new vehicle!
So here are my questions and concerns:
1) Is there any maintenance that one could/should do while the engine is removed?
2) The vehicle is still covered under warranty until the end of the year. Its been great since they have done over 18K worth of work on the vehicle. But as the warranty comes to a close, I was wondering if.......with a new engine.....I should be focused on getting an extended warranty vs just driving or even (gulp) saying goodbye to it.
3) On that note, despite my outcome with the new exhaust and engine, VW has been very cagey on communicating. Its been hit or miss. Even to get a list of the work that they will perform has been tricky and non-committal. My most recent request to get an extension on warranty considering the many months its been in the dealers lot was summarily denied. Is that request so far out of line?
4)Anyone know the dealer standard warranty on parts and labor?
Any general opinions or advice would be appreciated.
