Hey all,

I am thinking of buying a nice looking 1 owner TDI Toureg, I am just a little hesitant due to it having twice the miles my current car has on it, but I need something to haul a trailer, and my 2019 GLI just isn't gonna work for that. Is there anything that I should be looking for when I go and test drive the vehicle tomorrow?

Thanks all

just make sure you have a good mechanic with German car experience including diesels. These are very complex cars and the more miles the better chance to find expensive issues. What year is the TREG and level of features,ie Exec,Lux or sport ? What is the mileage?

All highway miles... and a little old lady only drove it to church on Sundays. Where have I heard that before? Is it a VW dealer that is selling it? Used car dealer? You say it is a one owner, so probably a trade-in. Typically, a 160k mile car will be wholesaled out. And don't go by how shiny it is, their job is to get it sold and off the lot, no matter what.
Under no circumstances pull the trigger until you get a detailed PPI by a qualified mechanic!

It's a Ford dealership in Bellingham, WA. I am planning on taking my VCDS cable so that I can scan it for codes, and they said I could take it for an hour long test drive, so I plan on getting it fully warmed up, and checking for leaks and any out of place sounding rattles. Unfortunately there aren't any mechanics open on Saturday, or I would take it to one.

Just a quick search on KBB for one in "Very Good" condition, comes back at 10-13k for private party. So $14,500 is not unreasonable for dealer pricing. BUUUUUUT, I can guarantee they did notlhing but a basic safety inspection, changed the oil (maybe) and drowned it in Amor All. DO NOT buy such a complex vehicle (and diesel to boot), without a PPI by someone who knows these vehicles. There will be more, do not think you have to buy this one.

Also, should I try to talk them down? They are asking for $14,500
Look it up in KBB and have an idea if they are in the ballpark, but yes, always offer less. When I buy from a dealer (rarely, cause I'm one of the poors), I ask for an "out the door" price that I like. They can take it or leave it, but I have yet to have an offer refused. As long as you have cash in hand or a bank check, let them know you're serious and that someone will make a deal with you. Might as well be them. Covflation may affect that. Try to find out how long they've had it.

You might see if they'll let you drive it down to Roger Jobs for a once over (as much as I hate them generally they do seem to know their way around Touaregs...)
I know not all the dealers around here do PPIs and I haven't checked with Jobs, but in that case I'd recommend SK or Harmony

Have you checked the status of the dieselgate warranty?
14ish sounds reasonable pending the PPI

Edit - looks like no warranty left.
I wouldn't buy that without a dealer or Indy PPI.
Proceed with caution! :)

So I guess that car was purchased from Roger Jobs VW, and had all of it's services done there since new. Just last month they replaced the water pump and all the associated hoses, along with the DEF tank and hoses. The vehicle looks super clean. I was able to test drive it for 30 minutes or so and it drove great. There was no rattling on startup and it did not have any error codes that I was able to find with VCDS. I was not able to complete the sale on Saturday so I am going back down to the dealership on Wednesday to finish and take the car home, but I feel good about it, especially after finding out Roger Jobs has maintained it since it was sold there back when it was new.

promising.... is that history verified via carfax?
id still want a PPI before pulling the trigger. thats a big gamble when you can buy in-warranty ones for similar money.
Not carfax, but I called Roger Jobs and he told me about it and was able to look up service history.

FWIW, That VW Dealer in Bellingham was very capable in diagnosing and repairing the DEF system needs in our 2016 TDI in October 2021. Tech was easy to talk with and seemingly proud of his work.

That's funny, I bought my treg from a Ford dealership and their techs couldn't tell the the difference between their @hole and a hole in the ground. They wanted to charge $500 to change a sunvisor plastic double clip. And failed to mention DPF had failed amongst many other issues even though there was a warning in big letters on the dash. I trust them as far as I could throw them

the ford dealer hes buying from is especially scammy too, so thats a fun bonus! :)

roger jobs is slightly better, but yeah this would make me really nervous without a PPI considering its a no-warranty car...

That is good to know, although my long term plans are to delete the DEF and DPF systems altogether, so I don't have to deal with them when they eventually crap the bed

My plan is to test drive it again, and scan it again with VCDS to make sure nothing is hiding. I have to say, it does hurt to trade in my perfectly fine 2019 GLI, but it just isn't practical anymore for me.

Definitely get your own carfax. This service, despite looking scammy, worked for me (I think they have a bulk license): Cheap Carfax Report #1 Source For Carfax Discounts! Coupon code: cheapcarfax

Also, at this mileage the cooper seals for the injectors often fail, so check for that. This can badly affect the injectors, I just had to have an injector replaced at 160k for this reason. Make sure they replace the bolt(s) when doing injector work, since they are pre-strechted and can break off when reused. They are $2 a piece. Also, a new injector needs to be coded into the ECU (which my indie guy didn't do), since they have manufacturing tolerances. VCDS works for that.

Lastly, stealerships really screw you on trade ins (ask me how I know). So maybe sell your GLI yourself. Good luck.

I do have VCDS, and I am pretty handy myself. I wonder if it would be worth it to just change all the injectors before they become an issue?
