Hi everyone! Yesterday I was making my first steps in a 4x4 practice circuit. It was one with sand and dirt (lots of dust flying) It was a very hot day (off-topic: this car kicked ass even with Michelin highway tires...there were some brand new broncos, hilux, frontiers, grand cherokees and rangers with BFG AT...but this V8 from 2008 stole the looks and the wows)

After lunch, we went back to the track and some kind of high frequency noise could be heard from the engine area. The AC stopped working (blowers ok, but no cold) and the thermometer was definitely wrong, it kept saying 27.5 degrees Celsius but it was way hotter. The water temperature gauge went slightly (not even half of a mark) to the right -hotter- and came back (and went up and down).

When we finished we sat down to discuss how things went and had some refreshing cool drinks (about an hour or so that the car was off). After that, we left and heading home the thermometer started showing the actual temperature (35 degrees and rising), the noise disappeared and the AC returned!

I must say the afternoon wasn't that pleasant, but I am really happy that the AC started working again. So the question is...WTF happened?

Edit: I don't have a diagnosis tool such as VAGCOM, I live in Argentina. It is really painful to buy things from abroad. Thanks.

Picture for attention. Cheers!!

So you want a diagnosis based on a story?
Ok, I'll give it a go....
Your rad\condenser were full of crud\dust\debris so until you got up to speed and got some airflow going through it, it couldn't extract the necessary heat from the system.

That is my main theory, I was wondering where this thermometer is located and how I could protect the system from dust, etc. maybe some mesh or similar?

A common strategy for the engine control module is to cut the A/C when the engine is running hot. I'm pretty sure Touaregs will do this. It happened to me in the wife's Panamera when I had it on a track with high ambient temperatures. It was around 42 degrees celsius at the time.

Definitely check the cooling system for faults. Was the noise you heard the radiator cooling fan running at high speed?

I can't say that the AC issue I had is going to help but it was so odd and easy to resolve that I may as well share it.

My AC worked fine except for 2x both of which were about 6 hours in to all day trips. The problem was that the duct that goes from the cabin filter to the evaporator housing had not been properly installed. This resulted in a reduced air flow which in time caused the evaporator coils to ice up. Next day of course it was fine since the ice melted.

worth checking since it's free and easy.

Have this issue with my 17 VR6 under CPO pushed the topic on multiple visits to dealer. Even brought car to VW dealer, left car running while it was happening so they could properly scan and diagnose. Had blower replaced, Evaporator was leaking had it replaced, still happens. Pushed LL here in US and got some relief but issue still persists in summer.
You can try and cycle AC button off for 5 min, then back on and it comes back but even that is such a PIA especially when its 90+ Deg F outside.
Wondering if something is freezing up and causing the issue. I.ll stay on top of it.I've got 5 months left on my CPO w. See if VW can replace more free $h!t under CPO
