At the risk of sounding a bit pious, what happened to the concept of self preservation and consequences of decisions. It really is all pretty basic, you match the vehicle and van and then leave the kitchen sink at home. Over the years we've travelled the length and breadth with just the basics and had a great time in the process. Last month we were at a free camp site and a family with a huge van trundled in, got out the generator, connected up to the only water source in the locality and started the washing machine. WTF.

If that is the current idea of camping, OK but it sure clogs up forums with endless discussions on weight. Simple, leave it at home.

@meggsy when we were shopping for caravans most vendors had the attitude of “if it’s not an LC200” then “you cannot tow with that!”
Not an uncommon comment that most Touareg owners will hear at some point
We were at New Age last week where this line was thrown at us by a sales person who new less about caravans than I do (and I know close to nothing...but I can read). We were all mates again when the manager looked up the Touareg specs. That said the visit was such a high stress, useless, waste of our time we will not be considering one of their vans.

Hi Grant -- yes but with 3500 Kg Trailer putting 350Kg on the ball and two persons on board even then thet only have around 100Kg of load left before exceeding CGM.

(Sorry not intending to preach here)
Touareg 7L is the only one that had a 350kg TBM limit in its book and I doubt that was achievable with rear axle limits
I know some have Reece bars that may state 350kg on the bar, but it is the rear axle that get weighed at a roadside check and you must be under the limit of 1530kg for a 7P. That in itself is a tough task with 280kg on the ball. The later CR's have a variety of weights for different models mostly less that 280kg except for the 170 base model CR with steel springs had 290kg, I cannot believe that would be possible without it dragging its but.

Hi Grant -- not preaching at all ... its still a common misconception that if the bar says 350 then that's the limit, irrespective of what the book says. This spreadsheet - (not my work) is interactive and allows one to work out just what weights are allowed -- probably need to join up if you want to open it though.. its also a bit dated but it does give one an idea of vehicle capabilities at various loads.... Facebook

Perhaps it's time I got off my soapbox on this issue though....

Read on via search and there is a whole raft of prior discussion on this. Without crunching the numbers myself I notice many seem to feel that the 3500 Kg van limit is more that the Touareg should be towing. Fair points made whether or not you agree. As per, just about everyone never gets to experience what happens when the stars align and it all turns to custard so for almost everyone wearing their lucky underdaks, all this will be more than they want to consider.

Have checked out two adjustable tow hitches available from AU supplies which looked the goods but when I asked the question about compliance to AS the answer was no. Well....one answered a straight no and the other answered with a vague non-answer which I assumed meant no.

I don't know what the implications are if that's the case; can they legally be sold and if so, what view would an insurer take in case of a claim?

They can sell them, you just can't use them.
