2005 R5.

I broke the PCV trying to remove it and there's still a stub sticking out of the cam cover.
It looks like you just pull on it to remove it but it broke when I did that.

Is there some release mechanism I didn't see?

The continuing saga of the PCV

I got the broken bit out, it seems that someone previously had pushed it in too far turning the stopper ring into a locking in ring.

The unit I pulled out doesn't appear to have any diaphragm in it like the new suspected dodgy part.
The question is; where is the valve of the PCV located if not in that round thing that also serves as an elbow into the cam cover?

Assuming you have removed the correct part, could the person who previously installed the part incorrectly prior have removed it?
What happens if you install the new part you have?

The new part goes in, it's not a very snug fit as it looks like the grommet is stretched from previous wrong fitting, forging it in too far.

Neither the new nor old part appear to have any sort of non return valve in them.
I thought there was supposed to be a diafragm and spring in that round part but a poke with a screwdriver only reveals hard plastic. (Picture of the part above)

The valve might be inside the cam cover but that doesn't seem likely.

OK at this point I would like to know if you could post up a picture of the top of your engine with any beauty covers removed.
Every time I search about PCV valve for a 2005 R5 I see a different looking part.

So it's not just me then? Good to know.
When that happens I come here to find out if anyone knows but you run the risk of getting an earful of cr@p from a jerk who has nothing better to do.

This is it:

OK so after more researching it seems that is the crankcase vent valve. VW part# 070 129 101 A from what I could find.
I also found a full picture of the BAC engine.

At this point it's just a matter of did the previous swapper damaged the cover it goes into to the point of a leak. Only you can tell on that.
So now that you have the new part in does the Treg run as it should or do you still have a problem with it?

Also, now I'm curious as to where the hose that comes off of it goes to.
I thought crankcase ventilators looped back into the intake of the engine.

I'm curious now, too. Can you open the disc portion of the old/bad/broken one? You might find that there is an orifice and diaphragm with a plastic disc for support or protection. The "valve" action is operated by vacuum, and is usually a simple diaphragm or a disc/cylinder inside a tube. They would both open when vacuum conditions permit to allow the flow of crankcase gases back into the intake.
