Just had this happen for a second time before I realized what is going on - when we parked to change drivers, we both got out and closed our doors. 4 year old in the backset decides to press the Lock button. I have the key fob in hand, engine is running, but the car won't unlock. The only way to get back in is convince toddler to unlock the car, or take remove the key from the fob and pop off the door handle.

Is there a way to actually unlock the car with the fob?

If the fob were left in the car the doors wouldn't lock...

Right, if you left it in the car it wouldn't have locked.

You're right, but I sort of feel like the programming/logic is a bit flawed.. If I'm holding the key fob and pressing Unlock, what's the rationale for not unlocking?

The first time it happened, I left the car running with kid in the backseat and walked a few steps to grab my chinese takeout.. The car was maybe 25ft away max, but didn't feel comfortable leaving a running car with keys unlocked downtown, even for just a few seconds.

You have a great point, no question.

On a similar note, has anyone ever set it so you CAN get out of the car with the key and lock it with the engine running? I got a lot of places with my dogs and it would be very convenient to be able to stop in the gas station shop for a bottle of water for myself/the dogs while keeping the AC running and the car locked.

Same thing as I said above would work Take the valet key out of the fob and stick it in the door. I'm sure theres a way to do it without sticking the key in the door. My Panamera I can lock when it's running, and as far as I know they use a very similar system ( If not the same).

Hmmmm good point. Valet key. Okay I’ll try that

I'm glad my '10 isn't that smart. I can get out with the engine running (fob in pocket) and press the lock button on the door handle and it locks. I go into the store, do whatever, and come back out and pull the handle once to unlock it and then again to open it. I haven't tried hitting the button on the fob to unlock it with it running. I'll try that soon.

when I first got my 2010 golf tdi I coded it to be able lock the doors with me outside the car with the engine running and FOB button windows down and windows up/sunroof close. I use all of those options daily when driving the golf tdi. back in the day when driving other rusty german cars without FOB's I would use just use two keys. thankfully on my 2010 Treg someone before me coded it to be able to lock the doors while the engine is running. I haven't been able to find the FOB window down/up via vag-com yet but I also haven't looked very hard either...just call me a vag-com slacker.

You won't find the window up/down feature via fob on your '10 because is it not an option on those or any year preceding them. No one programed yours to lock doors with engine running, it is a default thing that it does.

thanks! one less rabbit hole to chase.

My '10 lets me lock/unlock it with the door handle button or the key fob with the engine running.

I tried on my 2013 7P and yes if you lock the car from the inside with the engine running you can only unlock with the emergency key or from the inside. The handles and key FOB will not open it. I took the precaution of trying with the window open. If you shutdown the engine then the FOB and outside handle work.
