I have recently purchased and 08 Altitude in the uk, sound is terrible and I have looked for the amp above the cd loader and it does not have one. Is this normal and would the wiring be there to fit a vag amplifier ?

I don't have one either in my 2009 TDI, there's also the cd changer space above the inside glove box. My sound seems a bit off too, I'm thinking I'll replace all the speakers which should resolve that.
