Has anyone clocked speed differences in drive and sport?

The reason I ask is because going by feel, I would swear sport mode is slower than drive. Every time drive feels faster. I've never timed it or run a draggy to see though. Has anybody here?

Sport mode changes shift points and throttle “feel”. My 2015 feels much “sportier” in sport mode, I pretty much only drive in sport mode. Way better on the mountain roads too.

I agree the car definitely feels sportier in sport mode, but something about it just feels slower. Are there torque convertor lockup differences or something??

Except for holding the engine rpms higher before shifting, sport and drive mode can yield the same 0-60 times. Also, the max speed can be achieved in 6th gear (talking about the AISIN 8 speed). 7th and 8th aren't needed to hit 135 mph. It's in the manual.
I suppose roll on numbers are slightly better in sport, since it wouldn't have to downshift if it's already holding in a lower gear at higher rpm. I've never bothered to time it.

This is my whole predicament. Going purely by feel, I think drive is more powerful.. Hitting it in sport always made me feel like the torque convertor isn't locked or SOMETHING is happening and actually feels slower

Sport mode in a diesel is slower, it holds onto the gears after torque and hp have crashed.. its pointless, until you stage 2 tune it which extends the powerband a lil bit.. then it starts becoming a bit more fun. I think its pulls hardest in D avoiding WOT so it shifts early and keep it on the torque..

You could very well be right about that, that makes sense

Sport mode at highway speeds in the TDI- not much difference from D. Maybe quicker to drop to 5th/6th in S, which doesn't really help. Sport Mode around town, under 50-60MPH- noticeable difference, tauter throttle control, puts power down faster, less likely to be two gears up from where you want.
It might come down to driving style, and how the drivetrain has adapted to your style. Try resetting the transmission learning.
'16 TDI fixed, no mods- for reference.

You guys are killing me. I agree with everything being said.

My ONLY question I have is, has anybody proven (whether stop-clocked, draggy, gps, etc) if 0-60 is faster in sport mode?
Going by seat of the pants performance, I believe drive mode to be faster in a 0-60 sprint.

Using this image cuz it shows stock power:

Our Torque band is 1800RPM to 2500rpm.. our horsies go back to the stables at about 3500rpm.. When I had a manual TDI to drive it fastest, and get it to pull hardest I was shifting at about 3300 rpm which would drop me about 1500rpm and settle me back down at 1800rpm to ride the torque band again.

Driving a diesel fast is not like a gasser, its nearly opposite.. you shift low and keep power low to stay in that early torque band, if your getting anywhere near close to redline you are shifting PAST your power band and staying in the top end where all the power is falling out from under you.
