I did some research on tyres for 18" standard rims and decided to go for a generic brand. I have six rims and the whole set of winrun tyres cost $770 balanced and fitted i still had a bit more tread left on the 20" they replaced now in the shed. I was intending to give a report on how they performed on our trip to Darwin towing 2.9 tonne but its only gone from the shop to home as I'm now in lock down . I did notice there is quite a difference in diameter and was wondering if there would be any difference in speedo readout also following other vehicle home they seemed to be doing the same speed as the readout I'm assuming it works itself they dont quite look as neat in the wheel arches as the 20"s but hardly noticed any difference in normal driving

In most vehicles changing the overall diameter of the tyre (rolling circumference) will impact the speedometer/odometer reading.
Sometimes this can be rectified by changing the speedometer sensor or drive gear if it is a mechanical pickup. Not sure if there is a way to programmaticly alter that ratio for electronic units.
If your rolling diameter (centre hub to ground) has reduced then your vehicle will be travelling slower than previously at the same indicated speed. (as much as 5-10%)

I decided to use Winrun tyres too from Tempe Tyres in Parramatta. Im still on 21 inch rims and went to 285/40/21 ($149 each fitted and balanced) as the standard 275/40/21 are too expensive and limtied choice. There is a slight increase in diameter. Ive towed our van, similar size to yours and done 2500km on them, they have been great. See the attached link to show how different size tyres compare. Tire Size Comparison

255/55/18 is a nominal 29 inches overall diameter which is the standard nominal OD for all OEM wheel/tyres combinations so your speedo should still be reading a little faster than your actual speed to keep you on the right side of the law.

Check it on a level road against a GPS directions app like Google maps or Waze.

Chinese made Winrun tyres are cheap for a reason. My Treg had new ones on it when I purchased 3 years ago and I was very disappointed with their performance in the wet. I replaced them as soon as I could....I'm not willing to gamble with the lives of my family for the sake of a couple of hundred dollars.

Hi Steve.
Went to several Tyre Places to get Feedback for New Tyres for my Treg (275/45/20) Although happy to sell me Winrun i was told by more then one Dealer that the response from clients was that they were sub standard in the wet. I tow a Van as well so I decided to fit the Yokohamas made for SUV,s and the buy 4 pay for 3 made it ok price wise. I also think safety is Paramount to me rather then take a risk with cheap imports.
