Ok so .............8 weeks ago a message appeared on the MFD whilst driving over a speed bump in Whiteman Park - "Engine fault Workshop" followed by the engine light on and the glow plug light flashing. Car drove fine and took it in to the dealer the following morning.

Codes seemed to point to the pressure sensor in the injector rail which was replaced.
That didnt work and then all diagnostics pointed to the ECU. (Engine Computer Unit....I think)
That was replaced and then further different codes appeared indicating something else. Anyhow it transpires that somehow the high pressure diesel pump has now disintergrated and contaminated the diesel circuit with this toothpaste like looking stuff and metal particles.

VW technical say the recommended fix is to replace EVERY component in the diesel circuit. That is tank, tank internals, lines, pumps, rails, injectors.

So they are in that process right now. To replace the tank you got to remove the entire exhaust system and rear drive train. Most in the engine bay is easier as it resides at the top of the motor. (They are still waiting for a few parts which have been delayed due to the Volcano - Eyjafjallajökull)

I hope it all gets put back together properly and that after a week or two of being back in the car this episode becomes a distant dream?

Crikey evaddirb - what a drama. I hope they're right this time. Have they given you an ETA? Now that planes are flying again, surely it shouldn't be too much longer!

Geez, did you get any feedback on the original cause? Bad/poor-lubricity fuel, foreign contamination, defective diesel pump, etc? Would be nice to know the forensics on this one. :-k

Regardless, good luck with the rebuild and keep us posted on the outcome.

I am told cause was the ECU starved the pump of fuel which it should never have done.

That's surprising as I would have thought the car would have disabled itself, it does so for less serious fault. Now, I'm really scared, we have a v6tdi in the house (in a Q7) as well.....looks like I'll be paying for that extended warranty.

The fuel never starved whilst I was driving it only after they worked on it and attempted to get it going again. I think its got something to do with repriming the system after replacing the pressure sensor and the ECU not knowing what the heck was going on.

It is at the most northern one in Perf, Dubya Eh :)

As I found out today when my Caddy TDI had a total power failure (no warning, just an instant and total loss of engine power-no steering or brake boost...very scary!!!), there seems to be 2 types of VW techs. The factory mechanic type tech and the diagnostic tech. Interesting really, as our local dealership specifically imported a diagnostic tech from S/Africa to cope with increased sales, thus servicing issues. This SA guy tells me that over in S/Africa, he spent his whole day just diagnosing problems....that was his job. He finds the fault, and the other guys mainly do the work (he does that also). May be useful when your VW craps itself and the guys assigned to fault find may not be up to par with diagnostic training. Anyone else aware of this?

Dave, any further info 1 week later?

Not really. Last bits of spares are now in.
Now check, code, prime, start ??
Then road test, 4 wheel alignment check and then I might get a call maybe friday.

I have forgotten what it drives like.

Guys, I am thinking it is going to be a good week next week.
I am told it is 99% ready so maybe Monday or Tuesday?
(This sleepover began on 15 March)

Let's keep fingers crossed that this coming weekend is the last before you have your Treg back home! Keep us posted!

I collected the car on Tuesday arvo. It was back Wed at 8:30.
At this stage lets just say " Incompetance is beginning to effect my sanity" and my patience is running very thin.
