First off i know that there are many similar threads about this topic, but im not sure if my problem is like the related.

Ok, so i just got done driving 180 miles in the pouring rain. When i shut it off the fans stayed running at full speed sounding like a turbine . So i drive it around the block, and shut it off again, and the fans stopped. So i didnt think much of it.

So today i am driving it around doing errands and i shut it off and the fans are on again. Except this time they are at various speeds. The fans will be at full speed then settle down a little, then get back to mid speed, then almost go off and then go at full speed again(all while the car is shut off).

Could this be a temp sensor? Or maybe the fan module? Is there a temporary solution to this so that the fans will stop? I looked under the hood and see the connectors leading to the fans but am unsure if its right or not.

By the way, its not running hot.

I just don't want them to keep running and drain the battery.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, and maybe in a timely manner being that they are still running haha.

Thanks, Bob

i had same thing the fan and module are one part easy repair,
True, hopefully it's the fan/fan module which, is easy to replace. The temp sensor gets a little bit more involved...or maybe I should say difficult to replace. If you have a V8, there's a couple. One in the lower left hand corner of the radiator, the other, unfortunately is all the way in the back of the engine - not sure what is involved in replacing this. The V6 has one, located in the upper right rear of the engine. Accessible but you need a lot of patience and very small hands. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Bringing this back up as I have the following error:
18080 - Coolant Fan Control 1: Open or Short to Ground

I believe this is also why the AC doesn't really blow cold air. All of the fan/fan module info I've found seems to be a $300 repair.
It seems that a couple of the golf MK4 guys have create a fan mod, to make the fans work again without any issues.

This fan repair modification was developed for a 2002 model V5 Golf, it will probably be OK for other Golf models especially the V6
VWVortex.com - testing mk4 low-speed fan pics

Has anyone attempted this on a Touareg? Or am I reading the wrong fan/fan module switch (part of the fan)
