Hey everyone, I'm shopping to replace my current Pirelli Scorpion ATRs and want an AT tire that has good wet traction and still allows me to drive like I'm in a BMW M3 (well, as close as possible in an A/T tire anyway).

any ideas? Currently looking at the Falken WildPeak AT3W and just finished reading about the continental terrain Contact A/T. Any thoughts or other recommendations?

Just imagine for a moment how badly a BMW M3 would handle if fitted with AT tyres - well a Touareg would handle even worse due to the higher CoG and long travel suspension - in fact a Touareg on ATs won't handle nearly as well as a Touareg on All-seasons, let alone an M3.

Get another set of wheels and use different tyres.

I completely understand what you're saying. I understand that there will be compromises on both sides, I just want to find a tire that isn't so aggressivethat it makes my T2 handle like a Wrangler, but not so street biased that it gets stuck on wet grass.

Ido mostly highway driving, but love the spontaneity of adventuring off road when a dirt trail appears on my route. I tend to be a pretty aggressive driver (I'm originally from California, so you have to be pretty aggressive to get by in their traffic) and it may or ma not be uncommon for me to be driving with enthusiasm at or above 80mph. I already do all of this with my Scorpion ATRs, but they are only okay and I wondered if there was another A/T tire that performed better.

I think I’m going to try Michelin Defenders next. They aren’t ATs but the tread and sidewall look a little more aggressive than my Scorpion Verdes. I’m also going one step bigger on tires vs OEM

I have Continental Terrain Contacts, great tires that aren't loud like most A/Ts and I can't tell a difference in handling from the scorpions(which I also have because I thought they'd handle better). I had them on my range rover as well and loved them. I have 18" wheels fwiw

G'day

Cooper SRX - I had Zeon XLTs but they were noisy (got 83000 out of them tho) - and the SRX allows me to do everything on and off road.

Cheers

Same tires I am considering. Have them on another vehicle already. Any chance we could get a full side view of the Treg? I'm looking to fill my wheel well a little more than the stock 255/55/18s. Thanks!

The problem with the 19s and 20's on the Touareg's is you're extremely limited in tire options. So, you either buy a very good handling on-road tire that won't hold a candle off-road/snow etc, you buy an explicit snow tire, or you buy an allseason tire that handles ok, drive ok, and does ok overall. There really is no in between.

True. I suppose my Touareg doesn't handle like some with low profile19s or 20s but since the start of this post, I decided on a set that seems to strike a pretty decent balance for me

I got the Falken WildPeak AT 3 tires in 265/65 R18 for my '08 4.2L V8 with air suspension. So far, I'm REALLY happy with them. My previous tires were Pirelli Scorpion ATRs in the same size. For street biased AT tires, I never really felt that the scorpions were that sporty on the Tregg. They seemed to have a lot of squish and squirm in the corners. The WildPeaks definitely feel more stable in the corners thanks to the stiffer sidewalls. The steering impulse was just slightly sharper and a hair more direct in the Scorpions though. In wet weather, the scorpions were decent (at first), but became only marginal as the tires accumulated miles. The wet handling of the WildPeaks are Superb (we had a few days of flood level rains to test them out on). Time will tell how they do as the miles rack up. Only real con is a small noise increase over the Scorpions. You get a small amount of that "off road tire noise" at most speeds. They handle light off road terrain effortlessly (but I haven't done any real off roading yet. They did decentn on some washed out muddy roads I was on (with big ruts) but the mud was thick and caked on and these are not real mud tires. There was some sliding in the mud, but I was also driving like a hooligan. All in all, I am very happy about the balance these tires provide.

Good to hear of the tires! Thank you for the update

I drive the Nokian wgr3 SUV tires on my Touareg and they're awesome in every weather situation. Plus they're considered an eco tire and a run-flat

Nice looking tire there. I'm looking into them right now. I'm 99% positive they wont carry my size in 19s lol :(

Awesome! Same size I'm considering and they look completely in place on the truck. The factory size has always looked small to me in the wheel well. Good to hear your driving report as well. I'm due in the next couple of weeks for tires. Have these on another vehicle, and been very happy.

Yeah I have them on my van also. I really like them.

Research is fantastic if you find what you're looking for. Research is rubbish if you find what you're looking for, decide its what you want and then realise that actually it won't fit!!
I've got a 2009 Touareg and want to go off road, like nothing too serious but a bit of slippy stuff!
Research led me to Yokohamas Geolanders GO15 Good allrounder. BUT....I have 20 inch wheels. Yes I could change them but I don't want to, but I do want All Terrains that are not noisy but do...ok, off road.
Can anyone help?

The problem with our Touareg wheel sizes are, they are more of a luxury size. You'd have to go taller and skinner if you want to get into offroad-style tire territory or you'd have to downgrade to a 17" or 18" wheel which will lead to infinite selection in offroad tires.

I've been searching for some All Terrains for my 20s (and possibly thinking about getting 18s and new wheels)....

I've found that 265/50R20 is a fairly common AT size as is 265/60R18 decent selection. I'm looking at Bridgestone Revo 3 and Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus, but there are lots of options out there from all the major tire brands (Nitto, Toyo, Sumitomo, Kuhmo, Bridgestone, Firestone, Good Year, Falken, Cooper, General etc.... I found them mostly by searching by tire OD (for example 30" which gave me 30.0" to 30.9" in the search results)...

Does anyone know if 107, 108, or 109 load range work for the Touaregs?

I made a thread for finding tires by outer diameter: Tire Search by Outer Diameter & Rim Size (FYI)

Along the lines of OP, I'm looking for 265-65(or60)/18 tires that LOOK aggressive, but I know in reality I'm on road 95% of the time. And for dedicated off-roading I'd take the 110 anyway..
BUT
the Continental TerrainContact suggested above look great-- I'm also seeing Pirelli has a Scorpion Verde II, which is supposed to be better than the 1 (obvi. more road-oriented), and also a Scoripion All Terrain Plus, which is an improvement over the ATRs.
Anyone have comments on the Pirellis? (In road cars, the Pzero Neros have been my favorite)
