Hi all,

I may be beating a dead horse and have missed a discussion on this topic somewhere in the CT discussions. However, without fear of embarrassing myself; I ask, can anyone recommend a VAG COM unit for an owner of 2015 Touareg V6 3.0 TDI 180KW? My knowledge is absolutely zero and having looked at various options on the market, I am more confused than ever. Ross-Tech, which I believe requires a connection to a laptop (confused by cables with software and handheld units), OBD eleven (like the idea of the portability and Android connection to Phone/Tablet but trying to decipher the pros and cons is very confusing when one does not know a thing about this technology.

Totally new to this and need some wisdom from those with experience/expertise. Having to stump up around $66- $88 every time I get an error code could get tiring and expensive. Also, I live in a rural area and have to travel to get things checked.

So all you knowledgable people out there: HELP, please!

Do you have an old windows laptop? Cheap obsolete Win7 $100 laptops off of ebay are fine.

If you ask around, you often will find someone who will give you an old Win7 laptop that is currently sitting in their closet. $50 is often a fair price for them.

VCDS can be had for $200.

I like the idea of OBD eleven, but it still lacks some key stuff and (my understanding is) you have to keep making premium purchases. So, you rent it, don't own it.

I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WDJL8JN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, and it is pretty extensive as far as anything VW made is concerned (seems to read my 2016 VW Touareg TDI and A4 Alldrive alike). A nice plus is that it lets me clear any errors codes as needed, including service alerts, etc.
Thank you Nickyt,
Are you able to tell me a little more about the unit:
Can enable/disable functions on the Treg?
What useful functions have you found helpful on it?
I know this is a big ask but is it possible to find out exactly what functions are available for 2014< TDI Tregs?
Kind Regards,

Vic BLizzard:)

The manual is available at: http://www.autophix.com/download/7610-EN_DE_FR_ES_IT.pdf. Essentially, it reads all systems from VW cars to check for error codes and similar data. I do not think it allows for any coding, but it does let you clear alarms for sure.
Support is decent, I asked a few questions via email and they came back reasonably quickly.
Again I thank you for your information and will check it out.

Hey Mark,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Greatly appreciate. Which Ross Tech unit do you have and can enable/disable functions on VW Touaregs? Where di you buy it?

Kind Regards,

Vic
I have the hex can model...again its at least 12 years old, it allows you to do just about anything imaginable...from stereo tweeks, heated steering wheel temp adjust...trans code change...airbag lights...engine lights...test anything....Honestly the best tool for owning any vw..and specially a touareg. I even just disabled the stop/start on my buddies wife mqb tiguan for him.

Rosstech is where to buy it...right from them they have amazing customer service

Thank you Mark, I guess from the flag under your name you reside in Canada. Bummer living in Australia at the moment because the exchange rate is way from favourable for us and adds around 35% then we have to pay duty and then 10% GST on top of the total. I did get a tip from from David at Ross Tech of where to buy locally so I will follow up with both recommendations. Do you know if the unit have is still available or what the replacement comparable verion would be? I know - I am the pest from downunder but want to make sure I do not waste my money, being retired and all!

Sorry, I got the gentleman's name wrong from Ross tech it was Bruce Ruhf and he recommends the Hex V2 as a good starting point. Not sure how that compares with yours though.

canada isnt cheap either unfortunately, i bought the model i have because all my friends have vw....ive had 6...and my gf has one...i just knew i wanted one that would cover all vw age range basically....if your only going to own a touareg then what ever he suggests is likely best, they all do the same thing just some do all models and some dont....you also now have a limited usage of vins...i got in before that so i can use mine on any vw i come across which is handy for me as i switch cars a lot...and my current beater jetta needs vag com quite often lol.....A local distributor is a good choice long as you are sticking with what ross tech suggest as they are amazing for support and stuff

@Victor Blizzard what part of Australia are you? If you complete your profile it will help.

I appreciate your concerns with VCDS cable etc.

First of all.... are you semi competent with a computer? Can you watch and digest information via Youtube?

Have a look at these:
VCDS Tutorial

VCDS/VAGCOM Review and Demo

Why a good VW/Audi Tech uses VCDS

The last car repair tool you will ever need

Next question is how many VW's do you own? Also, if you become (semi) proficient with the VCDS tool, you will find yourself able to assist other members with their cars. Many people are very thankful for this and will repay you by way of many different bartering methods. A bottle of whiskey (nothing too elaborate) is usually me 'fee'.

So.... you need to consider..... will using this tool on only 3 vehicles be sufficient..... or could there be a need to have a 10 VIN unit?

I am fortunate that my unit is not locked into a number of VIN's. I paid about $500AUD for it about 6 - 7 years ago. It has been invaluable in regard to looking after our VW's and also for monitoring and scanning issues (not many if any) with the Touareg while touring, and then calling my mechanic and letting him know that module XYZ has error 3456 - what do I do?

Invaluable.

If you are keeping your Touareg there's only one choice wherever you are in the world:

VCDS from Ross Tech!

And you can always sell a Ross-Tech cable should you leave VW.

One word of warning about any diagnostic equipment: never make any coding changes without having a clear and certain record of your original coding BEFORE you start messing about!!
