Just purchased a 12 TDi and it does not have an air compressor. What portable air compressor will inflate the spare? I have a Ryobi 18V one+ High pressure tire inflator (sorry no link due to new member and rules) will this be enough? Please provide recommendations.

Do NOT run any compressor you may buy from any of the "cigarette lighter" type sockets in the car.

The power draw and duration of pumping required to inflate the spacesaver may cause an electrical fire.

Only use crocodile clips attached to the large "jump start" terminals under the hood / bonnet.

If your Touareg has air suspension, then it doesn't need an emergency air compressor at all, because you can inflate the tire through the connection point to the air suspension reserve tank under the passenger seat.

I have used the Green Slime compressor with the power plugs in my 2012 Touareg TDI with no problems. As to fire risk each power receptacle is fused to protect the wire.
I have not used the compressor to blow up the spare, but to adjust the air all the way around.
The fire risk is minimal or non-existent.
I got my Green Slime compressor at a yard sale for $0.25 so it wad a bargain.
My TDI does have the compressor in back, but when traveling towing a trailer and a full back compartment it is hard to get to.
I have used it with my 2012 Touareg and my 2016 Town & Country van with no problems.
Most accessories that have a cigarette plug draw less current than the plug in the car is good for and are also fused within the plug as well.
It may take longer to inflate the spare in the Touareg, but it should work OK

any evidence of this? I dont know what size compressor you might be trying to power from a cig lighter socket but the typical ones you see on ebay/amazon are well within spec for load.

You do realize those circuits are fused right???

Please explain how an electrical fire would start?

Please explain why Audi provides just such a device in the Q7 to inflate the temporary spare?

I also have a '12 that was missing the compressor. I wanted an OEM and found a few on ebay but asked at my dealer, new was going to be a few hundred dollars. One of the service guys said they had a used one lying around so he gave it to me. Not saying your dealer would give you one, but mine did! Good luck.

My 2012 were missing the compressor as well. I purchased the original VW Air Compressor on ebay.de (Germany) and paid $40 (plus shipping). VW Part No is 7P0 012 517A - there are currently several for sale
