Hello,

I have been looking on the internet everywhere, but I cant find anything similar to my problem.
Its touareg 7P 2011. RNS850 headunit. It takes about 15 seconds for RNS to start. After that sound comes from right side only and keeps braking (1second there is sound and 1 sec no sound and it repeats like this). It doesnt matter if its radio or songs from SD card or AUX connection in glovebox.

Did a full scan and there are a phew hooks. Channel 19 (Gateway) say that there is no communication with radio (Channel 56 ) and Tv tunner ( Channel 57). Everything else is fine.

So i took out the RNS, checked connectors there. Took out the radio in the boot (right side), repluged everything. Under drivers foot tried to get to j533 gateway module, which i guess is responsible for communication, but its in really tight spot and i can only see its 20pin connector, which is plugged in properly.

After all this, nothing changed and sound keeps braking. But during phonecalls sound comes normally, without braking and if im correct from both sides.

Any guesses what could cause this? Should I take out that J533 gateway module and replace it?

Hi there again. I managed to fix my rns850. After the update there are a few new channels in the list. But I do not have them. I think it was i channel 17 instruments. In the right corner next to coding you have instruments. Look there if you have double checked 56 radio channel. It was by me. After that clear all fault codes and there it was, the radio starts normal and all the speakers works just fine. Really hope to help.

Hello, thank you for replying to my post, but my sound hasnt fixed for me yet. I have tried replacing radio module in the trunk, the cd/sd card thing in the glovebox , but nothing changed. Now i started getting optical data bus faults, so it might be wiring problem for me. But as I mentioned before during phonecalls everything is normal. Tomorow I will try that thing with channel 17 you wrote about.

It would be great if you could clarify what you did to your car. Channel 17 is "instruments cluster" an I dont see instruments there. if you were talking about longcoding, in byte 10, bit 3 is checked, wich is radio/navigation system.

Hi, so after about 2 months i finally could get into channel 56(radio), which i could not do all that time. Went into longcoding, and changed byte 4, bit 1 to 0 or 0 to 1 (those sound profiles) and from than it works just like before. Dont know what was the cause of not letting me into channel 53. Could say it fixed itself

Hi! I resolved a problem with sound in my RNS-850. The solution from @Mladen is worked. I have had two checked blocks 56 Radio in the "Installations list" for Block 19 - Can Gateway. I am checked only one block, saved results and cleared fault codes. Then just switched off the ignition for a couple of hours. And everything works perfectly! Sound and radio. The solution is worked for me! Thank you, guys.

Guys ,

You cannot imagine how grateful I am .. I've just discovered today the above described behaviour of the RNS 850 in my car. I had exactly the same situation , fix it with the solution from above . I have to confess that actually I've activated the address 56 in the CAN gateway installation list . Thanks a lot !

You have four faults. One is static, it's the radio and three others are intermittent related with ESP, detecting tired driver and electronic control unit (I think J533). You need to find someone with VCDS. It should not be a problem, many people use it for various Audis and VWs. Then connect cable with the car and choose Select:

Then pick numer 19 - Can gateway. You need to be patient, it takes a long time for this to show up:

Then press Installation List. This screen wil show up. You need to scroll it to 56 - Radio and check if it is double or once ticked. If doubled pick only the upper one, then save and it should be ok:

After that run Auto-Scan from the first picture, then Clear all the fault codes.

This is very detailed explanation, which I really appreciate.
I have OBDEleven with Pro version paid but I cannot access 56 as it says Control Unit not Responding (as per attached).
I will try to find someone with VCDS or buy a device and I will revert back with the results. Thank you Lysy.

You don't choose 56 channel only 19 - Can. 56 according to the fault is not present in the system. I have no experience, if OBD11 will display 'Installation List' and lets You edit it, then it might be also the way to do it.

Hello Lysy,
I tried with VCDS but unfortunately it did not work. It had only the first Radio checked from 19 - Can gateway. I tried selecting the second one only, but once I went back, both of them were "forced" as clicked.
I reverted back to only the first one clicked and tried to re-run the diagnostics and clear the fault codes. So far no luck.
Attached is the log from VCDS in case you have time to check it out.
Also, when I try to click 56 - Radio, I get the message as unable to reach (as I have attached screenshot).

I read in one of the threads that the radio has its own fuse at the back, but im not sure if it was for an older Touareg (<2010) or for this one. Do you think this might be the case? I have checked the fuses in the passengers side many times, but I will try to re-check it again tomorrow. At this point remains my only hope.

Any ideas?

Hi Lysy, and others,

I ended up parking my car to a garage that promised to fix my issue, and 2 months later, the problem is not fully fixed. They replaced the back unit and charged me 500$ for it, but a after a day or two, I started having audio cut-out problems. Now the right side of the speakers work, and the left side of the car is completely mute.

I took the car back to the garage and they want additional 500$ to "program" the car. Not sure what they mean by that. I will run a diagnostics scan with VCDS just to check but I dont hope for miracles.

Also, worth mentioning that if on radio, the sound keeps cutting every other second, but if Im connected to bluetooth, there are no audio cut-outs. is this something any of you have faced before?

Would appreciate any feedback or opinion on this.

Take care

You have very old firmware. Try to upgrade it. Here's P0824 version to download:

Here's how to do it:

If Your MainUnit is really faulty this won't help or could even brick Your system, but it's very unlike. Of course the risk is on Your side and I can't guarantee anything, but most probable it will go without any issues.
