Remove shifter handle by prying trim cover off, removing lock pin and pulling up. Do not let the button retract! I pulled mine out so far that it locked itself out and no locking ring was needed.

Remove center console trim. First remove velvet lining from armrest storage box to reveal two T20 screws. Remove those and then remove trim. Be sure to pull up black plastic under the wood, don't pull on just the wood trim or it will separate from the black plastic support.

Pull trim up an disconnect all wires.

Remove shifter plate by disengaging the four tabs and the circuit board connector.

The circuit board under neath the shifter plate. The two magnets communicate to the transmission through this.

My problem was that the lower half of the rubber was torn from the upper, later discovered to be caused by a dime jammed in the guide (keep your spare change off of here!). This allowed for proper shifting of square magnet related selections(P,R,N,D,S), but lost functionality of the circle magnet related operations (tiptronic). Replacing with part 8E1713187F from ECS Tuning fixed it. The used car dealer I bought my Touareg from wanted $500 to fix it. I just fixed it for $102.94.
