My Treg (my14) started to drip oil on my return from my aborted Treg muster trip. The local Autohaus says its the the rear main seal, which involves a removal of both engine and gearbox, splitting the two then replacing bits and reassembly, and that it requires a special lift that only VW has. It's getting difficult to get an estimate of what it might cost as they need to diagnose it, and that starts at $195/ hr and no idea how long it might take, and I'm thinking that if the gear box is out, it may be a good time to change the oil since it has done a lot of van towing in that time. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys. I have taken your advice and booked the car in to another mechanic for a look see and a clean up, so that I can watch the progress of the leak. It may end up as it did in the referred thread by UnkyDunky that it just needs monitoring for a bit. The car doesn't seem to lose much oil.

Sorry I just remembered, my breather hose to turbo diffuser elbow didn't have a clamp so I put one. It stopped the leak but not 100%. I recall I took the diffuser off as it was leaking between diffuser to turbo seal by what can only described as poor design being held together by only 2 bolts. A little bit of silicone between mating surfaces, bolt back on and leak stopped entirely. Still no leaks 30k km later. Jesaulenko .... you beauty!

Our MY13 has what could best be described as ‘oil wetness’ below the main seal area. I believe the source is precisely as described by Sams Village above. We do not appear to be using oil other than when I’m fanging the Treg with the 3.5T Van on the back.

Another oil leak story - local mechanic tells me there is a small leak at the back flap of the engine and will need to take the full engine out and have it checked. A full wash did not apparently reveal anything on the rear main seal but he was not completely sure. His quote of around $1.8k to remove the engine and an unknown sum on full inspection, I am now looking for other options.
Pics uploaded tomorrow!

Well now 2 separate mechanics have verified that it is the main rear seal. The last guy cleaned everything spotlessly and took photo's to show. I am now booked in with VW to have it diagnosed, at a cost of $195/hr, and may take up to 3 hours. That sounds like a very expensive quote to me, but not a lot of options. I hate to think of the overall cost, just to replace a seal.

Well it went to the VW mechanic today and was returned with a clean bill of health, and no charge! The report stated that they could only find a small sweat from the motor and were unable to find a leak. They recommended checking again at the next service. They conducted a software test and found no faults and no updates required. Then they cleaned my car.
I guess I'll just drive it around and keep an eye on things.

You say VW diagnosis found nothing wrong with the rear main seal. So I guess you are back at square 1?
