Hi, I have a 2004 TDI which has an intermittent wind screen wiper problem which has been getting worse over the last few months. When you start the car and before you move off the wipers happily work as specified, once you start moving they may continue to work for one wipe or 100 wipes (no problem with the rear). Asked the dealer to look at it last service could not replicate the problem and no errors logged, come back when it is hard on. I did so they could see them not working. Car now goes back at the end of the week.

Concern is the dealer may spend hours chasing fairies and start changing stuff hoping they stumble on a fix, I am bit worried. Has anyone had a similar problem and can give me a clue to point the dealer in a sensible direction ?

WD-40 the front engine hood latch. There is a micro switch located in the latch assembly to stop wiper operation if the hood is open. Sometimes this fault will also show the hood being open on the MFI but not always.

You can also check to make sure your radio is in the dash the whole since that also triggers the hood open switch. Not sure why they tied it into that, but they did. If both the above suggestion and mine do not work for you, then you may have a faulty rain sensor since you said you run in intermittent mode.

Radio/Wiper connection

My wipers and Radio both seemed to quit at the same time....Radio security light shows as blinking (aftermarket kenwood), but won't turn on, compass on blink, and wipers won't work...rear fine and the squirter is good all round. What do you mean by "radio is in the dash" -- as in a loose connection?

Mattk, there is an anti-theft contact on the rail the radio slides on. The hood warning and lose of wiper function are symptoms of the contact not making a circuit. Insert the radio removal keys and pull the unit 3/4th of the way out, and then slide it in and push with some authority on both sides when it is flush with the dash to make sure that it is seated and locked in. I like to have a small towel between my hands and the face of the NAV to avoid finger prints and scratches.

Tried it...actually since I don't have the keys to remove the radio...had CARTOYS do the install...but what I did was just push firmly on the face of the Radio....and viola. Weird stuff....kills the radio, wipers and compass. I'm reading through all of these posts and have to tell myself that the great majority of people are not having issues with their Touaregs...otherwise I'm wondering if I made a mistake in buying it. That wiper outage made me worry about electrical gremlins...but I chilled out and realized probably just a simple thing...as long as I know what it is...this forum is great for that. I do love the car....won't give up my Chevy and GMC, but it makes a good addition....absolutely beautiful vehicle. Thanks much for the help...I may stop by CARTOYS to have them check the contact connection out and see what tools they use and perhaps buy some for my own use.

Ro ro...too late...;-). They had already installed the Kenwood...I had them add the touch screen, bluetooth and satellite on my 2004 Treg. The guy seemed competent...I watched him do a lot of the install. It would make sense to have the set of keys though.

I have the same thing happeneing on my 2005 with CD NAV. I have tried numerous times to rseat but it won;t clear. I even removed the entire head units (disconnected all plugs and the light won;t clear).

This brings me to my next questions. If it requires the head unit to be in place to not have the fault, how can anyone install and aftermarket head unit? It there a contact or wires that need s to be jumpered?
