After 2,500 km trialling the coasting function I turned it off this morning, I just don't like it.

I know I am saving fuel (would like to know how much) but I don't feel as "in control" of the car. I usually drive conservatively and the engine usually does most of the braking for me as I approach a red light but with coasting I have to throw the anchors out burning the brakes instead. So higher use of brakes or burning more fuel is the question!

Would like to know other opinions.

Co-incidentally I turned mine of this morning too. For city driving in traffic I find the slight lag between coasting and acceleration disconcerting and annoying. Feels like a flat spot when in reality is is re-engaging the transmission and allowing the revs to build back up. The good thing is it is dead simple to re activate, so I tend to turn it back on when I hit the country roads again. I have always thought the fuel saving would be negligible though, as the engine must use fuel at idle coasting, whereas it indicates zero fuel flow wind-milling when coasting is off. This could be an indication issue though as I doubt the heinies would add a feature that does not actually work.

Hi Logger ... you mean like a drive shaft bearing that self destructs every 100,000 km?

Don't think the coasting function comes on the MY15 V8 Tdi R-Line

I have the Coasting function activated and to date no issues. There is definitely no lag when the gearbox re-engages. Have to say I am quite happy with this function...so far.

Just checked a VW website. The Stop/Start and Coasting functions are only available on the "BlueMotion Technology" engines.

Interesting that BlueMotion Technology is not available on V8 TDI R-Line.

This would explain why I don't have either Stop/Start or Coasting functions with the V8 TDi.

The V8 TDi R-Line also misses out on Lane Assist feature.

Me thinks that VW did the V8 TDi R=Line customers a favour, by disabling these three not so useful features. Thank VW Australia. :clapclap:

Well coasting is deffinetly turned off now... at 29,500km my brake light has come on :( (2015 model 150TDI) this is 10,000km earlier than my previous Touareg (2011 model 150TDI) - similar driving conditions and similar type of road bias tyres. With coasting turned on I am on the brakes much more instead of letting the gears to slow me down and then use the brakes to do the final stop.

To also note the economy is slightly worse than my previous Touareg by 0.12 km per litre (actual calculation not MFD) but this is probably due to the highway mix 37.4% previous Touareg v 33.7% highway current Touareg.

Anyways it's turned off for good...

I am kind of puzzled what was or is the point of this coasting function. What is it gaining? On the open road I think I can understand some advantage but in the city?
If I switch my display to show instant fuel consumption in my 2013 treg then if I take the foot of the accelerator fuel use drops to zero. The engine still seems to provides braking, the gear box changes down as I roll to a stop but as I get near to stopping the fuel use goes up to 1.3ltr per hour - ie idle use. I figure at this stage the motor is being fueled to run as the gearbox is no longer able to keep the motor turning over. So I judge and coast to a stop where I can and not drive up to the stop and hit the brakes. Maybe cos I am an older fart and not impatient (any more). I am however conscious of people behind me and do go over the top in doing this ;-)

I agree the coasting function does have you using the brakes a lot more and I have played with driving in both modes and my preference is to have it switched off. I noticed it doesn't work cruise on or in sports mode.
I think it's just away of vw trying to be green when actually they are increasing brake parts sales.
Same for the stop/start function vw increase their starter motor and ring gear parts sales (joking) but I have mine permanatey programmed off because I find it extremely annoying.

It is not the ring gear etc on the stop start but the sudden cessation of lube on a hot turbo that I fear. So my stop start has been off ever since the fix came out.

You can reverse the default setting via VCDS - see https://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f67/start-stop-option-to-disable-it-226505.html Post #10

Edit: seems the link to the fix on MyTreg no longer works.

Maybe Noobytoogy can resurrect the info on how to do it?
as per the link in Noobytoogy had in his post. The details to de-activate are as follows:

Disabling Start & Stop

VCDS Procedure

1. Select [ 09 - Cent. Elect. ]
2. Select [ Security Access - 16 ] and enter the code ( 20113 )
3. Select [ Adaptation - 10]
4. Select "Channel 34"
5. Enter the following new desired value :
- Subtract "4" to the value of the channel : S / S systematically disabled each time the vehicle is starting(reverse to the original setting )
- Add "32" to the value of the channel : Storing status Start / Stop (ON or OFF). The status of the S / S front engine cut is restored after restartAnd alone or in combination of the above settings:
the original poster then typed:
On my TReg , the default channel 34 = 4
I put the value 0 ( 4-4 ) : it works, the Start & Stop is disabled whenever you start with the lit orange indicator .
