I am losing chunks from mine - much like you were. All four tyres are showing similar issues.

I will see what Goodyear say.
I had a set of Perelli Verdi tyres that did what looks like the exact same thing about a year ago at approx half wear. Perelli did a pro-rata replacement.
The Perelli rep said that the tyre was built up in layers and that the fusing between layers had failed.

Seems to be a spat of similar issues from more than 1 supplier, have to wonder whether the supply of raw materials to tyre the manufacturers is somehow implicated.:surprise:

I spoke to the local Goodyear dealer. He suggested I swap to the winter rims/tyres I mentioned, leave the Goodyears with him for the Goodyear rep to look at. I will get to do this over the next few weeks. Will advise outcome.

Had the replacement Eagle F1 Assymmetric tyres fitted yesterday. Seem to be identical to the originals [right down to "made in Germany"].
60% off full retail which equates to a saving of about $50.00 per tyre off Tyresales online price.

Ah I wondered about what price the discount would be from. Good detail thanks. So depending on wear could be a waste of time. Better to just buy a new set from Tyressales or rather NOT buy Goodyear like ever again and find another option. I need to check the tread wear . . . .

Here are mine. Same tyres after 55000km. Fronts have the chipping. Rears are ok (3rd photo). Were ok - ripped one on a pot hole last night. Shopping for tyres today. Had assumed the chipping was due to my rough driveway up until reading this thread just now.

Exactly the wear I had on my Goodyear’s. FWIW, the Audi techs told me they are still having WIDESPREAD issues with Goodyear in general. Similar wear issues on Q7 and even the more powerful sedans.

What model Goodyear are they?

I have Efficient Grip and they are doing very well.

Info from sidewall:

Goodyear Eagle F1 SUV.4X4 275/45R20 110W Asymmetric

Came fitted on my MY14 V6TDI (with air suspension), purchased Sep 2013.

Pictures taken today at 55697km.
That's a pretty soft tyre, UTQG: 240.

Mine are UTQG 640. I holed a tyre not long after I got the Treg, I couldn't find the right Goodyear so I put on a new Nexen and fitted it to the back thinking as a cheaper tyre it would probably wear out at the same time as the Goodyears fitted.

The Nexen wore to rags and the Goodyears still have plenty of tread. I had to find a 2nd hand Bridgestone to put on.

Don't tell noobytoog, he'll have a conniption.

I don't know WTF a "conniption" is but I just had one!!!

LOL!

conniption

[kəˈnɪpʃ(ə)n]

NOUN
NORTH AMERICAN
informal

conniptions (plural noun)
  1. a fit of rage or hysterics.
"his client was having conniptions on the phone"

Latest...I'm at the tyre shop getting another set of F1s fitted. Price was good $250. Mgr reckons the front tyre flaking near edges is consistent with too much toe-in. Alignment should fix. It is something my service centre should have picked up over the past 4 years. (Looking at reports provided they told me three years in a row that 5mm tread was left
Also apparently the brake discs were getting thicker!!! I have changed service centre.) For the new tyres I'll be monitoring and have the support of the tyre shop guys who are confident in the F1s.

Ooh it's ready.

Results of wheel alignment revealed toe-in exceeded maximum tolerance (ie. toed-in too much) on three out of four wheels. On the fourth (left rear) wheel it was zero (didn't toe-in enough) but that is the one that clobbered the pot hole.

This at least supports the suggestion that a small amount of excessive toe-in can overheat the tyres, cook the rubber, and lead to the splitting and flaking.

Reference Front min/typical/max: +0.4mm/+0.7mm/+1.1mm
Observed Front Left: +1.5mm
Observed Front Right: +1.3mm

Reference Rear min/typical/max: +0.2mm/+0.4mm/0.5mm
Observed Rear Left: +0.0mm
Observed Rear Right: +1.4mm

They are now aligned to +0.7 both fronts and +0.4 both rears.

Too bad you didn't stick with them. In a few years, your car would have been brand new with under 100 miles on the odometer. At that point, they would have purchased it off of you for Full Sticker Price.

You really missed out on the deal of a lifetime. /s >:)

Too much toe in will often make the front end bouncy but I don't know if 1.5mm will do it.

Hi Flash, what is UTQG and how do you know mine is 240?

Btw performance-wise the tyres have been pretty good. They just look bad.
Uniform Tire Quality Grading, commonly abbreviated as UTQG, is the term encompassing a set of standards for passenger car tires that measures a tire's treadwear, temperature resistance and traction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Tire_Quality_Grading

"how do you know mine is 240?" I looked it up:wink2:
Tire Rack will often have the specs.
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+F1+Asymmetric

240 is pretty soft.
