Anyone know what’s under here? I was expecting to be able to plug in a trailer plug but it’s just a cover.
2016 Touareg TDI w tow package.
From what I’m reading in the manual it’s for a standard 7 pin. But is there a special bracket I can purchase to put on after taking the cover off?

You plug your own plug (female) into the wiring that is hiding behind the cover and that receptacle serves as the receiving end for the plug on your trailer.

Since different countries have different standards, VW lets you buy your own plug locally. You can get one from the dealer for $$$$$, or get one online for $.

Let me get this straight. You purchased a Touareg with the tow package, yet it doesn't come with a trailer socket? Wow, the touareg has really gone downhill from the T1/T2. :(

My 08 T2 has the factory tow module and hitch and only came with the "dummy" plug cover, too.

I bought it used, so I don't know if the PO added the hitch and module, but I doubt it. Why would you add those afterwards and NOT install a plug? I suspect it comes that way from the factory. (See my above post.)

I guess that the reason is to cater all the different types of plugs in different markets. Just insert your local flavour.
Still odd, as a NAR tow package is always equipped with the standard 7-blade RV style socket. Some pickups also include an additional 7-pin socket, or a 7-6 or 7-4 adapter.

I guess I'm just use to the T1 not being so watered down.

Litemup, I bought the Pollak 11-893P 7 way adapter from Amazon for $14.00. It matches up to the holes perfectly and you use the same screws that are holding the cover on now to attach. Super easy and cheap. VW sells exactly the same part for $60.

If you look at the VW parts photo, it say Pollak right on it. I bought the amazon $14 one and it works great.

Hello,

I had the exact same problem. I went to plug in my trailer lights and low and behold a plug. I went to my local dealership and with a small amount of arm twisting, they gave my the OEM vw PLUG.
I told them my car was advertised as tow package included and I could not tow the way it sat.\The part would have cost me 90 cdn plus tax.
You will notice the auto hatch is disabled when using the tow plug.
Enjoy
