Thought I would attempt to give back a little to a forum I've gotten so much out of. I just crossed the 3,000 mile mark on my 09 TDI Treg after an 800mi round trip to Greenville, SC. After driving full-sized GM SUVs since the late 70s I was ready for a change, but was reluctant to downsize, after 3 months in my Treg I wish I had made this move sooner;

what I like:

Diesel power plant is responsive and powerful, moves the Treg more efficiently off the line than my 2007 Yukon does. Once at highway speed, this engine gives you want you when you want it with negligible lag.
Handling; After reading reviews about the Tregs curbweight and it's impact on handling, I was pleasently surprised at how well it handles. You really appreciate it on highway on/off ramps, once the Treg finds it slot you have complete confidence that it's not going anywhere, very impressive.
MPG: averaging a combined 21MPH (my driving is 85% local). My AWD drive '05 Escalade clocked in @ 12MPH, so needless to say this is a major improvement for me.
Turning radius is also unbeleiveable, especially for an all wheel drive vehicle, very tight and no chatter.
Interior: Beyond the obvious great looks, it is ergonomically friendly, the guage cluster is well laid out and therefore easy to find what you're looking for. Rear seats fold down easy to provide a generous cargo area for a vehicle this size.
Tech Pkg: The Nav system is as good as I've ever seen, easy to use with great visual effects. The bluetooth is also a great plus, being able to download your address book and have your six most dialed numbers loaded in a easy to use memory screen is another reason to find excuses to go for a ride:cool:.

Tires; I have the 19" tires which is fine for me, the beach driving that I do here is on pretty hard packed sand. If I was still in NY and doing more trail driving I would have asked my dealer to put the 17s that came with the truck back on it.

Any cons would be more an issue of form over function (for a vehicle in this price range why not have retractable side view mirrors as well rear seat climate control in LUX pkge)

Hope I covered all of the bases, bottom line is that after having driven most of the European and Japanese counterparts and having lived in domestic vehicles for over 30yrs, VW has put out a vehicle that satsifies all of my needs and pleases all of my senses.

Paul

Thanks Paul for all the helpful feedback. Drooling at the thought of driving my own in a few weeks. Especially offroad!

What part of NY you from? I haven't done much NYS offroading in the past few months. But did get some in last weekend in NH (see below). Regards--Chris

Strange I thought the side mirrors are foldable on all models ? Heated rear seats would be good, impresses the kids.

Chris, I'm a downstater, Queens/NYC/Mattituck the Port Washington. Used to ride the fire trails at the Pine Barrens in Manorville and offroad Upstate in Roscoe and the Irish Alps. Good luck with your new ride, you won't be disappointed.

Hi Yeti, please help me out with the retactable sideviews, dealer told me they didn't retract and I went with his word. I will start scouring now for any switch (if they're electric) after I try them manually again. Thanks in adcanve for the help.

You should have what looks like a mirror icon at the bottom of the mirror knob. Switch the knob to what would be the 6 o clock position and they should fold in. Been like this since they came out and all of them had them so no reason why yours shouldn't. 12 o clock position is the heat and you should not leave it in that position unless you need it or you will burn out the elements in the mirrors. I typically let mine switched to the left when I am not folded or using heat.

Oh, and generally sales people have no clue about anything they are selling. :)

Yeti, as a member of the sales community it pains me to agree with your last statement:). As for the mirrow control knob, on my Treg the 6 o'clock position is for the heat and twleve o'clock is just a nuetral position for the left/right side adjustments. I wonder if this is another item theat was put into the Lux+ option package. After looking deeper into the owners manual, for the Tregs that have this option, I can't believe it it's a friggin option:evil:, the settings are in the 7 o'clock for heat and 5 o'clock for retacting. Thanks again for your help.

All I have to say is WOW!! WTF are they thinking deleting that option. I use mine and like the feature for when parking in parking garages and when offroading in narrow trails to allow for other passing vehicals. Well they should at least fold manually, If not then that was yet another stupid azz decontent item. :x

Just got done washing it and they do fold manually, at least you have some protection against oncoming texting traffic ! By the way, I took my family to Park City in July, my kids had never seen the mountains, you live in one of the most spectacular places on earth inhabited by the nicest people.

The area and skiing is the reason my wife and I moved here. We are originally from PA and used to vacation here almost every year skiing. We moved here in 2000 and have not regretted it yet. We were here for the 2002 winter olympics and that was awesome too. We want SLC to get another winter olympics since we are pretty much all set up for it now. There are a lot of places I have yet to explore here such as Moab, but I may get there next month if everything goes well. :)

My sideview mirrors can only be retracted manually and only partially. They do not go flush against the front windows like my 05 Jetta can. That is one option that I miss, specially when going in my narrow garage. The other option that I wish was available on 09 Treg shipped to the US is "adaptive cruise control".

Alright, my neck of the woods. I'm in Northport (Huntington, NW Suffolk area). Know the Pine Barren roads (Toppings Path, Hot Water St, etc.) quite well myself. Haven't done much offroading in the 'Irish Alps' (Catskills, right? :p). But hit the trails every few months when visiting family in lakes area of NH. Let me know if you ever make it back here. Most locals don't seem too eager to see what their rigs can really do offroad. Oh well.--Chris

I agree with your statement, Yeti... ;-)

'09 model seems a little more US'ed than previous ones, no mechanically foldable mirrors, rear heated seats, 4 zone climate control, air ride, etc.--but, at least it's got one good engine in the line up even though with the handicap of that horrible blue liquid!

I've got mine for almost 5000 miles, and should write my review soon.

New to the treg

Hi all been enjoying reading your veiws have had my TDI6 for two weeks now. I live in perth Western Australia. Taking thethe car to have a play in the sand too day so looking forward to it. Have owen and used off road a lot a nissan Patrol for 11 years. This has ben such a change. so much to learn and find in it. So far i just love it.

My patrol was fantasic 11 years ago when i purchased it new. It was a 2. 8 l diesel with intercooler and turbo. It developed 92 kw and 330 newtons. it had ad a top speed of 140 km per hour down hilll. It shamed many a vechicle off road and had 532 000 km up when i parted with it. Too buy a new partol was too buy the same as what i had even to the cassette radio player inside? For what new metal?
Went to test drive a Golf diesel. Loved it. So did my wife. Been buying Hyundia Gezt's" to pass on to my teenage sons ( 2 ) Golf was for me. Loved the test drive. Tongue in check said pity you did not make a 4x4. Miricales . we do. Heaven sent. Comparision: Seats set low for highway. Sportscar preformance, comfort unquestionable. Savings in fuel unbelivable. Believe it will go any where my partol would if not much more. Will wait a little whie for some trips ( Scratchy and deep ruts) first scratch hurts the most especailly with the wife in it.
Took it up north of Perth Australia 200 km to some sand dunes to test and bog. Bogged easy with full tyre pressures 38 lbs.
Not cars fault climb hill and backed off then power just dug wheels in ( have photos of sitting on body) Took friend in recovery vechicle many tries to reach ( at least 2 good Friend)where i got to. After that dropped tyre pressures to 24 lb and when every where. It was me to back off not car frightened of becoming air born. Love to use then for what they are designed for but do not want the repair bills for stupidity. So looking forward to trying more. Comparison Patrol T Rex : Touareg Raptor
