My 2006 Touareg V-8 needs new tires @ 25,000 miles. My wife's 2006 Passat 4motion has 10,000 more miles on Michelins and they look great. My Continentals are quickly losing tread. Soft compound? Any recommendations [price is an object here!]? Thanks.

How are you going to use it? Any off road? I like the Nitto's for winter and off road use. I'm running the stock Wrangler HP's for summer. They are getting loud in the second summer. Go to Discount Tire direct and put in your size. lots of options, watch the tread wear index, the higher the number the longer they last. 300 are soft 400 is better, 480 is great but not in snow. The lower number tires are softer and work better in snow and rain.

I prefer my General Grabber AT2's. 255/55/R18. Great tread warranty to 96,000km. I have over 40,000km's on my Generals, and show very little wear, I trust that they will last 180,000km's before there done. www.tirerack.com and type in vehicle, and select General Tire, then AT2's
