I've decided on the oz canyon, more than likely will have them powdercoated a satin black (car is offroad grey). Heres the dilema. I really like the look of a 20" rim, but living in colorado i'm constantly in the mnts snowboarding, and do some light off roading during summer months. Spoke with tirerack at length, there is the BF Goodrich Alterain TKO available in a 285/55/20 or, i can just do and 18" and go with the Bridgestone Revo Dueler in a 265/70/18.

Thoughts? How do you think a 20" wheel will look in a 55/20 offroad tire? Will i sacrfice at all or do you think i will be fine? Lastly, thoughts on the oz's in a satin black on an offroad grey?

Appreciate the advise!

First, I really like the idea of the OZ Canyon wheels powder coated either a satin black or a gunmetal grey. I also have an Offroad Grey Touareg and think this combination would look great!

Now the tires.

For good overall performance, VW recommends tires with a diameter of 28.7"-29.5".

The 285/55-20 BFG AT's are 32.8" in diameter and weigh 50 pounds! They also cost $328 each!

For offroad, I run Bridgestone AT REVO's in 265/65-17 (great tire, BTW) which are 30.5" in diameter. I can't imagine a tire 20mm wider and more than 2" larger in diameter fitting on the Touareg without some serious clearance issues. Also, even if they fit, your onroad handling will be seriously compromised - slower acceleration, longer braking distance and general sluggish/sloppy handling due to the tire diameter and significant increase in unsprung weight.

The 265/70-18 REVO's are almost the same - 32.6" in diameter. I would suspect some clearance issues.

If you don't have a V10, I would consider the 265/65-17 REVO's for very good overall on and off road use in dry, wet and snow.

They don't look bad, either:

I went with these Ronals with Hankook Ventus St RHO6 tires and it looks awesome.

Hankooks are quiet, look great and reasonably priced too!!

I almost went a very similar route with my wife's Treg.... but didn't (still kind of wish I had). The BFG AT's in the 285/55R20 probably won't fit w/o some decent massaging to plastic inside the wheel wells. A good alternative, and a better tire IMO, will be the Nitto Terra Grappler in the 285/50R20 size. It measures 31.26 height with a 11.69 section width. It should sneak in there, but the offset of the OZ may affect that. I have 265/70R17 which are .25 taller but 1" narrower, they clear everything just fine.

Black wheels? Very nice!

Lastly, IMO the Touareg V8 is overgeared with the 4.56 diffs and 28.5" tires. It takes to the 31.5" tire very well

I agree 275/45/20 is the best size. I tried 285/50/20 and they kept rubbing in the wheel wells when steering aggressively. The 275/45/20 fit like a charm. It's also the size that the Treg cousin the Audi Q7 uses on their V8s.

For all season use, the Yoko Paradas I used were perfect.
My tire size is 275/45R20XL

Here's a link to Hankook:

Welcome To Hankook Tire

I will post a picture of my rig soon but it is the same color as the one above. Reed Green.

The wheels are easy to clean too!!!!

Cheers
