Love the Touareg. One tank of diesel and drove from Gosford to Gold Coast, then Gold Coast Brisbane twice and a little local running around - 1347kms (842 miles). Has the 100 litre fuel tank but still averaged 7.3 l/100km (39mpg), and 7.0l/100km (40mpg) for the 800km leg from Gosford to home. Refilled with 99 litres. Not bad for a 2.3 tonne vehicle.... must be the finely tuned, clean running VW engine!

It is great to do an 8 hour drive on just over half a tank. Cheers Paul.

HI Paul, couldn't agree more, I have the 100ltr tank as well which makes for a great touring range.

I drove my car from Southport to Melbourne recently when I picked the car up, I filled the car in Coffs Harbour, then again in Glenrowan (Vic) trip computer read an average of 7.8, actual consumption of 8.2 when using a fuel consumption app on my phone (Gas Manager).

On all of my previous VAG cars I have found the trip computer to be a bit optimistic, have you checked your consumption real time versus the trip computer? I would be interested to know if you have the same discrepancy.

Matthew

Concerns have been expressed on here that because the Touareg also uses the contents of the fuel tank to help cool hot fuel returned from the engine that running the tank as low as you have done might cause HPFP failure which can cost up to US $16,000 to fix.

These failures are also potentially down to fuel quality too and appear to have occurred mostly in th US.

However, if I ran a Tdi , especially in a hot climate, I would always refuel at a quarter tank.

The figures quoted are calculated with 99 litres, the vehicle trip data was 7.2 (fully topped up on leaving, fully topped up on refill = 99 litres), and the Pirelli Scorpions I run P265/60 R18s are larger dia than standard by 30mm (from memory) which makes them near spot on with speed/distance when checked against a gps. I have checked it over 5-10k? and is was 0.1-0.2 kms out... so that would be say 20-40kms off the 1347 total displayed, which would still make it around 7.4-7.6 l/100kms. I left at 4:30am from Gosford and there was very little traffic and plenty of cops... so I stayed right on the speed limit all the way :).

Thanks pretty impressive! Fuel pumps should be very accurate as they are custody transfer meters.

I have been told that you should be very careful to never run a diesel motor out of fuel, if I recall, the injectors would fail due to no lubrication, despite this, part of me has always wanted to run her bone dry (with a full Jerry can) to see how far she will go.

Is it safe to run the panzer out of deisel fuel?

Agreed, I know about the running out of diesel which I watch very closely. I didn't know of the "cooling the hot fuel returned"... which Noob raised (thanks).

From memory, fuel temp is a measured value you can read with the Vcds, it would be interesting to see if the car threw a warning if the fuel got overly warm due to the reduced volume of fuel in the system proportional to the amount returned to the tank after cooling the injectors / pumping system. Like Nooby infered, it would only be an issue in warmer climates.

Coincidentally someone posted yesterday of a major HPFP failure in their 2012 Tdi which occurred after running very low on fuel.

His saga with VW is just beginning with VW claiming it's down to water in the fuel . . .

If your careful with the V8 (mainly acceleration not speed) you can achieve in the low 7s between south of Canberra & Penrith its mainly freeway with only a little bit of stop start. The ugly part however is when you throw about 3 tonne of caravan behind it pretty much doubles which I guess is to be expected given your now twice the weight. Still its far better than a Cruiser.

What's a HPFP?

(By the price, looks like something made of solid gold and replacing it requires disassembling half the car to get at where it's located... :))

My Guess is it's the High Pressure Fuel Pump? wouldn't have thought it was $16k though

Pretty impressive consumption figures for the T3. You can add 3-5 liters for the T2 V6 TDI...:-k

So, did you get a 100 liter fuel tank as a separate option or is it included in the 4xMotion (Terrain Tech) option package? Can you get 100 liter tank for the V8?

And a further question (actually slightly off-topic: what's your spare wheel solution with the T3?

100ltr tank comes as standard with the 4XMotion versions, and also with the Comfort pack in 4Motion versions. Pretty sure the V8 TDI has the 100ltr tank as standard.

Spare wheel, just the temporary one at the moment for me.... need to do something about that as it would be pretty useless off road. I took a full size(20inch) spare with me on my Central OZ trip 2 years ago in my Q7 because it only had an inflatable spare as well - took that out for the trip.

The pump chews itself into swarf which then gets everywhere hence the US$16K. Some have got off lightly with only a $10K bill.

V8 R Line comes standard with a 100Lit Tank.

In terms of a spare have learnt from experience ie 400km on dirt road towing a caravan on a space saver that the VW option just doesnt cut the mustard. On long trips where we will be away from civilisation I fit 18" rims (Porsche) with a spare on the back of the caravan. Not much different to the winter tyres option in the US & Europe really.
