Getting an engine light warning.vehicle is ok to drive and the tech has replace some sensors but the light came on today. He has ordered an o2 sensor to fix this problem(if I remember correctly) if it is the problem.Has anyone had a situation like this or are there any techs here on the forum that has tackled this.I can get the codes tomorrow if needed.
The warning comes up as it being to rich and to lean which is weird(like a vacuum leak but there are no leaks.) but I know it can be fixed.other than that my Touareg is perfect with no problems.:)
Thanks all.

Last time I got a "system to lean" code, it ended up being my spark plugs. Bad plugs will also give you an error code regarding the O2 sensor. I got the code but after I did the plugs it went away. When was the last time you changed plugs, coils?

300 miles more to go and the warrenty will be up on the 50,000 they know the problem is there and I am not worried.Even if I go over the warrenty they are still going to fix it.I also have the 100,000 package.
I just had the tune up done at 40,000 and it was fine then. All that is left now is that o2 sensor and we will see how it goes from there but if there are any techs out there that has seen this problem please chime in.My tech is doing everything he can to get it right but the way the computer is showing it.It is a very hard thing to find. You can either be to lean or to rich.I have both. That is what makes it really hard to figure out.Sensor should be here today since he ordered it yesterday.I will know here soon.Thanks.

problems

Well....I have got the vehicle back since this friday.I have not had a warning light come on until today and now I am traveling to Key west.Plus to really top it off.I can not find my Nav disc. For some odd reason it came up missing when I tried to use it today.
It has been a while now and I can not count how many times I have dropped the vehicle off now to get this one problem fixed. It is finally getting to me.I had a lot of problems with my first Touareg and now problems with my second one.My next vehicle will not be a Touareg. It is just to hard to go to the dealership once a week to try and get the same problem fixed on. Any help from any tech would be greatly appreciated./Thanks

sorry to hear you are not happy. these are great rigs but are plagued with little anoying problems. being that I was a touareg tech since the launch I have to say tech support is learning with the field techs as these vehicles get older. another problem you may be running into is an inexperienced tech on the case of your concern. as repair times for techs get cut and not being able to get paid for the time that it takes to give you the attention your vehicle needs, alot of experienced techs are leaving the trade and young techs from the academy with no field experience and poor product support are replacing them. I am now seeing alot of the new academy kids leaving the trade and the dealers are scrambling to fill bays with bodies and a heart beat. you need to know the tech who is working on your car, ask to meet with him and explain your concern. just by talking with him you may have a better idea of who is working to get your car back on the road with an effective repair the first time.

The tech I have is a great friend. He has been doing it for a very long time since the beggining so he is not inexperienced. He has fixed a lot of Touaregs and even dropped my engine and a few more.
He has been doing everything he can to figure it out.The problem is that the vehicle will not register a warning until after about 100 miles into driving it.Then the warning comes up and last for about 2 days and then goes away.It is the same code every time.I am getting a to rich and to lean code.he has changes the 02 sensors, mass airflow and even had the wire connectors replaced.they are all baffled by what is going on.Plus this is not a very big issue with a lot of Touaregs. It is a very rare issue. This has been ongoing for several months now.I just hope VW tech can figure this one out. There is one guy though named Brian and he is VWOA Tech.He is very good and my tech just found him again here recently so he should be able to figure this problem out a bit faster now.It is just a matter of time though and we will see what happens.
I love this vehicle and it is great.I am not fustrated with the fact that it is hard to fix the problem.I believe you can not fix something like this the first time.It would take a lot of miles to do it.I am just burnt out from having to go back and forth when we think it is solved and then another warning pops up for the same thing. It took a couple days for this one to pop up and I had drivin it over 300 miles before it came on.So you can imagine how hard it would be to find something like this.It is just a matter of time.

What idea would you have that could be producing this code.I am going to call him tomorrow and get the codes from him to post it up to see if anyone and yourself may know what is going on.Thanks

what bank is setting the code ?? I could find it hard to believe it was an o2 sensor causing this code but it is possible. the only time I run into this rich/lean code is with a MAF sensor and may also have a calculated load fault with it, if he has already replaced the MAF he may want to try a harness overlay to the MAF for the bank with the concern, I have had what we call a "ghost in the machine" and sometimes unplugging the ECM and then connecting it again does strange things and concerns go away. these vehicles are famous for ground connection issue's and that may be a good place to start. on a far fetched note if you have a lazy injector that is not working correctly and is not following pulse width protocol from the ECM this could cause rich/lean concerns. I had an N-80 valve pork me on a rich/lean condition fault before, but that was a 2.0, when the leak detection pump activated the N-80 valve would leak and caused a mild rich condition.

I know that he did replace the wiring connectors cause I can see them on both sides of the air filter box.He was telling me about the corrosion issue.
Also has done 2 or 3 smoke test thru the hoses to check for leaks. He even ran the cleaner fluid thru the injectors.(The good stuff.I forgot what it was called. Not the stuff you put in the gas tank.)
When I call him tomorrow I will tell him what you are telling me and I will also get the codes from him to show you what I have.
Thanks. This is very helpful.Anything else you can think of please let me know.I am pretty sure you will have a better answer once I get the codes and what was done. Thanks again.

Can the dealerships in America carry out online software updates? We can in New Zealand and believe me they can fix some weird problems. It seems to me that the engine ecu is getting confused as it shouldn't really be bringing up a too rich and too lean fault the same time. The only other thing I can think of is that the lambda probes may be in the wrong banks i.e front probe from bank one is correct but the rear probe for bank one may be in bank two by mistake.

Codes

Even after aeverything was done the codes came back on with the engine light and went away after about 3 days of staying on.It was off the last day or so and has just come back on again this morning. This is what it normally does and has been doing it for a very long time now.
If anyone has any more ideas please do tell.I am going to talk to the tech tomorrow on monday to see if we can fix this with what Goozienz and the Doctor mentioned so far.

It's not exactly the same thing but it is a VW... I had this problem on my '03 W8, too lean, rear O2 sensors coded. I changed the plugs and the problem has stayed away for the last 8 months. (nock on wood).

I just changed the plugs in my '04 V8, easiest thing to do, only special tool I'd recommend is a warble extension.

Good luck.

As of right now,I am having the spark plugs changed.I am having to pay for it since it has not been brought up by the techs but it is ok.I am hoping that this could solve my problem but who knows.once get the vehicle back I will know in a few days if the engine light pops up again.

Plugs

Update:
Well I got the spark plugs put in yesterday ($300.00 worth and hoping that may had done something.)and today the same codes popped back up.He has a feeling now that VW will want to put injectors in now but would think that is weird because he flushed out the system with the cleaner already. It up to VW tech now.
It has been a few months since this has been going on.I am thinking it may take a few more.:(
