Marty, thanks, problem solved, I used a multimeter to check out which pins were earth (there were two of them), then it was pretty straight forward finding out which of the pins was the side/park light pin (which for the left hand headlight is the top right hand corner of the connector with the headlight assembly removed to reveal the female connector on the car body).
I got connection from bulb to headlight assembly, I got power to the top right hand pin, so the deduction was the pin wasn't making proper contact, I got some compress air and gave it a swish, bent the pin on the headlight assembly just a tad, all is a-ok.
Just for everyone's interest, there appears to be ALOT of fine dust all over the light assembly, the connectors and the headlight rail on the car (for the aussie readers - bulldust I would imagine), so I think the design is probably not ideal for Australia or any other country where there's bulldust. A better approach (as used by local manufacturers) would be to use rubber boots on all connectors.
