I'm willing to bet the V10 or V12 or some high powered TDI will not go extinct in north america...I doubt it will wear a VW logo, and none of us will like the price.

Porsche can jam the V10 into its Cayenne and charge 6 figures for it (and get it) no sweat...
Nick,

I agree; the demise of the USA v10 TDI (beast) in lieu of the (baby) v6 TDI, and what you outline, compelled me to locate and acquire 07 v10 to my spec. before they became scarce. Its one of the best decisions I've made

I hope your are correct; the word (in the USA) is that 2008 is the last year we'll get the v10 -- that the v6 TDI replaces it, with no hint that we'll get the v8 or v12 TDI in a Touareg.

Can you post up your info source?

And many many other sites..

The V10 will continue until it is replaced by the aforementioned engines. But alas I don't know about the states.. You do have another approach to diesel powered vehicles than us in Europe..

I really hope you are correct -- but I've not read anything that said that the Touareg was getting Audi's v12 TDI (or even the v8 TDI) -- only the v6 TDI, however I get no emotion from a v6 TDI.

Do follow the abovementioned link. Or google it. But of course it is not an official statement from VW. They rarely announce new models 2-4 years in advance..
But common sense is that VW will plant the Audi 4.2 liter in the Treg since it is more powerful and economical than the existing 4.9 liter V10.

Now the V12 TDI Q7 and R8 hasn't even been released, so it is of course journalistic speculation that it will find it's way into the Treg.

But then again 2012 is still 4 years into the future..And with new Porsche leadership they might choose to consolidate the 3 platforms. So we are not even guaranteed that Treg III will ever surface.

I only saw mention of a v6 TDI.

I notice the v8 TDI is only slightly more powerful stock, ie:
v8 TDI 326hp/760nm
v10 TDI 313hp/750nm.

Less powerful when chipped; ie:
v8 TDI 370hp/850nm
v10 TDI 382hp/910nm.

...but hey, I'll take it over a v6 TDI

V6 FSI 0-60 8.3 seconds
V8 FSI 0-60 7.6 seconds
V10 TDI 0-60 7.3 seconds

V6 TDI 0-60 8.3 seconds (and probably half as less fuel as the FSI models - not bad when oil is over USD$100 per barrel)

I have test driven the V6TDI and you would think you are driving a V8 petrol - very little engine noise and power that throws you back into your seat. The diesels all have upgrade options (simple plug in Chip DIY no wire cutting at all) easily obtaining more power and sometimes better fuel economy as well. A diesel engine also has much better durability / life and also much better for towing. I think the V6TDI will be a big sucess in the US as it has been in many other countries already.

Audi's Q7 v6 TDI published numbers show almost a second slower vs. the FSI v6; IIRC 8.2 sec. vs. 9.1 sec., thus its interesting that VW.au gets better out of the v6 TDI -- But why quibble; its clear that the v6 TDI will be about as quick as the v6 gasser (which is not close to the FSI v8 @ VW's 7.1sec 0-60, for my 2007).

Motor Trend discredited VW's published stock v10, 7.5 sec. 0-60, with it's 6.3 sec. road test; 2005 Luxury SUV Overview, Prices & Specs - Motor Trend. The VW.au site show 6.8 sec. 0-62 for the "mild chipped" v10-R50 @ 345hp/850nm -- thus v10 numbers are all over the map.

However, its clear that a v6 TDI, can carry the v10 TDI's water from a power standpoint; ie:

v6 TDI
225hp/500nm - stock
260hp/570nm - chipped

Does not compare to;

v10 TDI
313hp/750nm - stock
382hp/910nm - chipped

I agree there will be a "economy market" for the v6 TDI, but It can't replace the v10 TDI on the performance side of the market -- as is planned for the USA.

now that the r50 v10tdi is out the audi v8 tdi is low on hp !

ehd - would the 1 second difference be because the Q7 weighs 1,000 lbs more?
Not the way I read the specs.; its less than 100 lbs difference.

Q7 v6 TDI (Tare weight) 2295kg = 5,060lbs
Touareg v6 TDI (Tare weight) 2251kg = 4,963lbs

IMO, the 08's v6 TDI's are a tad quicker than the slower 07 number published; now Audi and VW show similar numbers for the v6 TDI and gasser.

The AVERAGE vehicle loses 20%+ a year via depreciation. Sounds like where you got really burned is on the prior vehicle and you are still paying for being upside down on that one.

10% REAL depreciation. Ask any owner of traditional SUV's, be they Fords, Toyotas or Hummers, what sort of trade values they are being offered right now. They are all doing MUCH worse than your TDI. Its all relative.

I was out kicking tires this weekend, the used car lots are packed with late model SUV's at fire sale prices. At the same time, the econoboxes that they could not give away 18 months ago are now selling at full list. It is not the Treg, all SUV owners are trapped at the moment.

The fact that diesel is now a buck more per gallon than regular gas is not helping either. I feel your pain on this one. My own econobox is a 1986 524TD and the price of diesel is now making me consider an alternative beater like a Honda Fit.

But hey, we understand your pain!!

It is my understanding that one reason diesel is more expensive in U.S.A is that we trade some of our diesel fuel for European gasoline. European refineries have a surplus of gasoline due to the high demand of diesel vs. gasoline. In return U.S. refineries trade U.S. refined diesel for that surplus gasoline. Any truth to this?
