Hi All !

I'm a former owner of a 06 Touareg V8 Executive. I was forced to trade it in due to some chaanges in employment and using it as a commute vehicle was just impracticle. Since then I've owned multiple VW and Audi products and looking to stay within the family.

I'm considering a CPO Touareg TDI being that I now drive a ton and want a comfortable long distance cruiser.

My question is do I go with a V6 or pay the premium and go with the TDI?

I know the TDI will payoff in resale down the road....Im hoping to run it til approx 100K miles.

Any real life experience would be appreciated.

I'm looking to swap my V6 for a TDI for reasons of fuel economy (and a newer one...). TDI.

TDI. The AdBlue is not a big deal.

TDi, but do look up HPFP failure - it's only $16,000 to fix - and SWS - sometimes unfixable.

Forgive my ignorance but I've never owned a diesel. But it seems there is are a number of additives and things like running low on fuel that if not properly followed can result in thousands of dollars of out of warranty expense.

Or am I making too much out of this?

Of course you are - if you don't have an HPFP failure.

Or course you're not if you do.

Currently I own an 05 V-8 and 12 TDI. The TDI gets almost twice the mileage as the V-8 overall. I used to drive 150 miles round trip to work and back several times a week with the TDI. Was getting around 29mpg. The V-8 gets 15 mpg...cannot seem to get more than 15....maybe 16 with a stiff tailwind. The TDI doesn't care if you going uphill both ways, it's amazing.

If you take care of the TDI, follow the maintenance and use the proper oil, etc, use a fuel additive, and have an extended warranty, it's one of the best rides out there. Especially if you drive a lot. If you are doing just short trips., the TDI is not your horse. It's doesn't get a chance to heat up and regenerate the systems properly.

Yes, you're making too much of it. I'm in my second diesel -- about six years worth of driving -- and have found modern diesels no more problematic than gasoline engines.

AdBlue is not a problem; sensible regular maintenance takes care of it. Yes, a few people have had assorted problems with AdBlue malfunctions. But a few people have had problems with every subsystem in every type of vehicle on the road.

Running low on fuel is not a problem at all. Your range on a full tank is around 700 miles; within that distance you can certainly find a diesel pump -- and the nav system identifies them for you.

In the OP's situation I'd certainly go for the TDI Touareg. It's a rock-solid, quiet, extremely comfortable highway cruiser which gets very good fuel mileage for an suv. Of course, if you want extreme economy you shouldn't be looking at a vehicle this large or this heavy.

In short, modern diesels are completely housebroken. The only time I'm aware of driving a diesel is when I refuel, and that chore doesn't arise very often thanks the the good mileage and the large tank.

TDI. No questions asked. If I could afford a TDI before I made my purchase 05 V6 I would definitely do so. I commute between houston, dallas, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Austin quite often. It hurts having to wait for everyone to pass you, then punch it, wait for 5 seconds, oh!!! There's the power!!! Let's go!!!! Speaking of that, I was driving to Dallas from Tulsa. Believe it or not. A 02 Corolla outran me.

Thank you everyone this is great info!

I drive between 25K and 30K miles a year. Im beating the crap out of my S4 and love the idea of a quiet SUV to cruise the interd=states....it's not unusal for me to drive 6-8 hrs.
