Anyone have anyexperience ordering items form Carter VW in Seattle? Their website says OEM at 10% off or so. No one in New Mexico has a hitch, so I am going to buy one from them and have it installed in Albuquerque. Any advice on who should do the installation? Only the dealership? WIll they need VAG the wiring harness to move it to US specs (based on my search, I take it this has been an issue)? THanks for your help.

This is what I would do

Buy a curt hitch from etrailer.com
Buy a OEM wiring harness from 1stvwparts.com and do the install yourself or have someone do it for you. A little over $300 spend excl install.
Many good write ups on this forum about installing yourself

Any idea if the factory witing harness is available for the 2007?

I heard from one dealer that it wasn't orderable alone. Dunno if he was just trying to get me to drop the $900 he wanted to install the whole deal, or if VW really hasn't released the wiring harness. He also said there were significant enough changes to the 2007 (sounds odd) that the 2006 wiring harness would not work.

I vote for the Factory Setup. I like the controllers abilty to mess with shops, and the hitch itself is WAY nicer, IMO. Even though it get's covered, it weighs a TON, and weight = quality in towing accessories, right?

THanks for the help and feedback. Never have I had...

so much trouble finding a hitch. No dealers in the whole western US could find ont, so I ordered one from etrailer, but the VW parts place mentioned above had a web site that was WAY to difficult to navigate. Then etrailer said it would take two weeks to get. Then, finally, my local VW dealer was able to buy one from an AZ dealer who marked it up, so I am buying the world's most expensive hitch. About $1400 included installation labor charges. I hope it is great. Thanks again.
