    I had to split this

    1. I have listed the diff carrier bearings as LM50334/LM503310
    2. What is the part number for the pinion gear bearing?
    3. The output shafts have needle roller bearings. I have found a part number on the following site(Transmission case front. Fits: Volkswagen (VW) | Jim Ellis VW Parts) as 311401301 and ideas on where to source these from in the UK.
    4. How is the preload on the pinion gear bearings set? Is this a crush sleeve setup or does it require shims. If its a crush sleeve where can I obtain this from? Also what figure in in/lb is required for setting preload?
    5. How many thousands of an inch in backlash is allowed?
    6. If there is anything else anyone can think of please let me know. I will be photographing and documenting the procedure to help others if faced with this dreaded issue.

Any help you can provide would be gratefully received. Thanks

Hi. Im a victim of the dreaded diff groan. Our car is a 2004 3.2 V6 with 85000 on the clock. To my horror when I drained the oil I though I was rich as it looked like I had struck gold. It looked like someone had emptied a pot of gold glitter in there. What brass part has been worn? I would have thought that bearing failure would be metallic steel of some sort, but the wear is some sort of brass!
I am getting ready to pull the diff out and rebuild it. I have been quote 4000 to 5000 for a new diff. I have read that a few people have successfully done this. My original plan was to pull the diff strip down and order the bearings required, however doing this would mean having the car off the road for at least a week. My plan is to order all new bearings and seals. I have a few questions regarding parts and torque figures.
