Because DPF delete without making the engine throwing codes all the time and falling back to limp mode is only possible with firmware modification, and because firmware modification is detectable by the dealer (and is likely a copyright/DMCA violation by itself anyway), it's pretty safe to assume that his warranty is out of the window already. Or at least the burden of proof will be now reversed, and it will be him now who will have to prove that the failure of anything remotely related to the engine didn't occur because of the delete and firmware modification, instead of the dealership having to prove the opposite. Just my two cents.

Only if me removing the DPF system/tuning caused the failure of another component. Say my HPFP or injector or alternator fails, it wouldn't be caused by deleting the DPF or coding it out in the tune.

I'm not worried about warranty issues. Worst case scenario, I have a stock ECU I can throw in, and re-install the stock exhaust pretty quickly.

Yes, this clears the DMCA thing, but still doesn't mean the manufacturer will also have to abide to the terms of the original warranty.

You can't know that - and even if you could, it's beside the point. And that is, that the firmware has been modified and replaced with one, that's not from VW. The product has been altered, and it's not working anymore as intended and warranted for by VW. Because of that the original terms of the warranty do not apply to it anymore. Now it's up to you to prove that a component that failed didn't do so because of the modification you've applied, but would have happened anyway. Only if you can prove that will you have an actual case even for a limited warranty.

Sounds simple, but is not. The ECU being stock will not make it identical and indistinguishable from the original one. Like most likely every ECU has a unique serial number which is not trivial to fake (even if possible). Or mileage inside the ECU and in instrument cluster will not match when you swap around ECUs. Or who knows what other "traps" and flags you will trigger, that have been placed there by VW just so they can detect any tampering with their products. Once the latter has been determined, it will be irrelevant whether they will able to tell exactly what you did or how that affected this or that component, because of the reversed burden of proof.

I personally wouldn't trust on being able to deceive VW. Then again, I also wouldn't intend to do so, and wouldn't delete my DPF anyway for a marginal gain (if any) in performance, while at the same time increasing the amount of carcinogen particles emitted by my vehicle possibly 50-fold.

You want to play, you gotta pay. Warranty is gone. TD-1 code will be thrown. You'll get to dig deep into your pocket if the HPFP eats itself up, for a complete fuel system replacement.

Let me know when to start making popcorn.

At the risk of pissing off all the Negative Nacies out there, you guys need to back off my fellow Igloo resident from the opposite coast.
I may not be able to spell his user name, but based on his posts and some of the DIYs\Projects he's shared, I would jump to the conclusion that he's slightly more advanced than your typical donkey....... he seems to have enough knowledge, access to resources and comprehension to be able to take such calculated risks and to attempt to "work the system" in the event of a warranty claim....

Let the guy enjoy his setup and worry about everything blowing up on your own cars..... clearly he's comfortable with the risk of a "potential" issue.

I'm not really sure what the plural of Nancy is......

You wouldn't use a Bulletin board to suggest how to rob a bank, murder somebody, or any other illegal activities, now would you? The line has to be drawn somewhere.... gross polluting, lack of diesel particulate filters due to removal or lack of SCR catalysts due to removal, to make your vehicle a gross polluter, so you can be so special and entitled so as to have more horse power or performance, on a car, on our public roads, is where that line get's drawn.

You want to modify, do it on your track rig, or whatever it is you want to drive for sport on a closed course competition track. But, it's over the line when it's on our public roads, and should not be condoned.

All of the above is in IMHO.... you want to discuss illegal stuff, polluting modifications and stuff like that, it's probably better to do it via Private Messages, not on the Bulletin Board, where it's left as evidence. It's called common sense, don't leave tracks leading to your doorstep for Big Brother to find.
