Smell of petrol and low efficiency

Hi all, my recently purchased 2007 3.6L FSI consistantly smells of petrol and has aweful economy... the clock says it's getting 8km per liter, but I have used 30 litres for just 100km... so something is very wrong? Any ideas b4 i take it to the stealership?

Sounds like a possible fuel leak..... start it and start crawling all under it, under the hood, etc..... "petrol" leaks are typically easy to find visually\smell, especially if they are that significant. Is the engine running good otherwise?

Hey TurboABA, thanks so much. I just bought it so can't compare to anything, but yes it runs brilliantly, I love it... haven't seen any wet patches anyway, and were talking about some serious litres!

If it runs good, it has to be an external leak. If it was internal (as in engine) it wouldn't run good.
Fire it up and trace the fuel lines underneath from the tank all the way to the engine bay.
Then move into the engine bay. With that much loss, and such a strong smell, I can't image you wouldn't be able to visually see evidence of a leak.

There is a recall for cracked fuel filter housings.
Lift back seat and if carpet hasnít been cut out a perforated circle, fuel pump has never been accessed. Mine was cracked and leaking badly and surprisingly I couldnít smell it inside but could smell it when passing by back door. Dealer should fix this at no charge to you if this is the problem

Maybe you hit it on the head! Cracked fuel filter housing under the back seat. Stealership told me it wasnt one of the recalls so had to repair at my expense. Was spending more on fuel through so happy to have sorted it
Thank you!
