I suggest you write as concisely as you can to Honest John at The Daily Telegraph and see what he thinks to the 70/30 split.

Also it would be good if you posted on the UK site as this one is fairly US-centric.

If we have to deal with this kind of crap, we might as well have a freaking KNN cone filter on. At least it won't get sucked into the freaking turbo. Good grief!

It sounds like this issue can possibly happen after going through a car wash? The place I go to has a high pressure touch free system.

Here are articles from China regarding the issue and the VW recall in China. The second article raises a lot of questions that VW's solution is half baked. By removing the drain valve it does seem to be replacing one problem with another.

The company will recall some of the imported Volkswagen Touareg car series ? Minagao blog

Touareg owners are skeptical about the recall process and program. Popular exclusive response is not tolerated.

I found this subject very interesting! I read all of the post and thought it may be a good idea to check out my air filter and box to see if I may have a problem. I have a 2012 Hybrid with the supercharged engine and did not have very much clearance to remove the cover but did manage to get it out, the front of the filter looked ok but the bottom was moist. After removing the filter it was obvious that I had a problem. The filter media has some type of cheap foam on the back side and it had mostly deteriated and it had partially clogging the drain. I was able to remove the drain pipe and it was all clogged up with deteriated foam junk from the filter, I flushed it out and put it all back together. I am going to purchase a replacement filter this week.

So be warned. I do not think that most service techs when they replace your filter will also remove the drain pipe and remove the junk that is plugging it up. If your lucky they might vacuum the junk out of the box leaving you at risk when you do have an incident getiing water in the air pipe and it not having a way to get out!!!

I am a big OEM guy, but I am considering going to a K&N oil filter drop in over this because the main filter media is more robust. I know all about dirty air intakes from these...especially when they are cleaned and re-oiled, but am reconsidering my view on this filter for this specific application. The more people saying they are experiencing this, and the fact that I have too (wet deteriorated filter). Obviously a clogged drain can be cleaned, but if the filter material itself is clogging... Arrrrrrrrrg!

Anyone running one of these in any Touareg engine configuration? Feedback would be appreciated.

There are dry media filters that you could also look at.

I will have to do that, was researching and just not comfortable with the amount of dirt that the k&n let's by.

Conversely I could also just by a boat load of OEM filters and switch them out more frequently than once a year like I am now. I don't drive much anymore, so that equates to once every 5,000-9,000 miles depending on Treg.
