V8 TDI noisy during deceleration

I've noticed a more mechanical sound when I lift off the accelerator going down hill. It's more of a rattle then a turbo whine and increases volume with engine RPM during a down hill decent.
I don't hear it coasting to a stop on a flat road just when the engine is braking the vehicles speed.
Just wondering if anyone had any experience of this or is it normal?

I don't recall ever seeing any noise complaints about the V8 Tdi engine.

VW Touareg models are as follows:
Generation 1: T1 is model 7LA & facelift T2 is model 7L6
Generation 2: T3 is model 7P5 & facelift T4 is model 7P6
Generation 3: T5 is model CR7 [Not available in "VW Atlas" North America!]

Going downhill, is it when you have applied brakes and the regen braking kicks in?

The noise is when you coast downhill (no accelerator or brakes) and the engine is acting as the brake, I'm not sure if the turbo waste gates open to release pressure is what I'm hearing.

What kind of noise exactly? Have you scanned it?

No Fault codes from a scan last week, tail shaft was inspected last service 2K ago.
The noise is from the engine and increases with engine RPM on a down hill deceleration when the engine is braking the cars speed. No nose during hard acceleration or any other normal driving.

- Not the timing chains: Would be noisy in any situation, not depending on positive or negative load (your case) of engine
- Not the turbos: They are idling during downhill decent when no fuel is injected in engine. Anyhow noise would be worse during pull with boost pressure
- Not an intake manifold leakage as it would be noisy also at idle when the pressure of manifold is negative (natural aspiration of engine without turbo help)

Your ratlle suggest a transmission issue.
Either the torque converter, in engine brake mode (downhill with no power demand), either the diff axle as it is very common to have different noises on brake or pull mode of axles when wear begins. Could be the gear box or transfer case also (bearings).

Well if it is engine RPM dependent and not vehicle speed dependend, then it is not the axles or the transfer case.
Torque converter is RPM dependent
Gear box inlet is RPM dependend

90000 km my suggestion is that you check your gearbox fluid level. If too low then correct and test the noise again.
I dot see anything else but torque converter that could cause such noise only in downhill engine brake situations.

Thanks Igor, I think you may be right. I'll book the car in with my mechanic and get it checked out.
Thanks.

I noticed on the weekend going downhill that the slightest touch (and I mean slightest) of the accelerator the noise disappears.
